Big Yellow Bolete (ID Please?) + more hunting pics
    #22325172 - 10/02/15 06:48 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Had a nice hunt today. It is raining a ton in these parts so the ground has pretty much been wet for 7 days straight now.

In particular I found this big yellow bolete-type mushroom that I'd love to get identified. I just recently got back into the mycological world again after having a few tough years and I'm thinking about taking a specific interest in the polypores. The other day I was able to identify Lenzites betulina by using Mushrooms Demystified and found out it's one of the few gilled shelf mushrooms which is pretty cool.

Anyway, onto the bolete and other pics. I found this big specimin on a deciduous hard-wood forest trail. It was pretty dark out and I wasn't able to take it home since I had no pack, and the darn thing dyed my fingers yellow with its spore juice!

As you can see cap is yellow in the center surrounded by a kind of brown-ish color that almost looks a little blue-green in the pics. The best example of the true color of the cap margin can be seen in pic 4, its more brownish than the first pics may suggest. The pores are entirely yellow, the stem is kind of white/pale with maybe just the barest hint of blue but I can't really be sure. I honestly didn't notice much of a staining color.
(also you might spot a little surprise if you look closely!)

Now here is a fairly large puffball with a cool and distinct cap design (I found a ton of another type of puffball but only one of this). It was in a fielded area as they usually are. If anyone might know the specific name for it I'd be interested to know.

Other than that I just have a few pics for you guys taken with my iphone. All in all its a great time to be hunting mushrooms out here in the East coast. I wish I could do more but I will be quite busy for the next 2 weeks.

Last one looks like a Chlorophyllum species

Thanks. I've already identified Clorophyllum molybdites at this spot years ago though it may be another variant.

What I'm really interested in is the bolete, but maybe its hard to get an ID on it from the info I have or maybe just no one is interested in it.

I plan to start learning about them in-depth myself soon anyhow. I think one of the reasons I like Mycology so much is that there's always something to learn and the more effort you put into it the more you start to appreciate mushrooms in general. A specimin needn't be edible or active to be interesting to me, though that helps.

If no one has commented it's because Boletes can be pretty hard to ID and people probably don't know what it is. Although it is rather distinctive and i like the yellow colouration! I have no idea what it could be though.
The puffball could be Calvatia craniiformis.
Given the habitat, the Chlorophyllum could be C. rhacodes or one of the other species very close to it (all grouped together as 'Shaggy Parasol's). Spore colour would narrow it down a lot.
