Outdoor Bed Question
    #22324183 - 10/02/15 02:59 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I was perusing the boards, and came across this:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22313672/page/1

Is it necessary to weigh down the substrate in an outdoor bed?

I left mine just covered with a light tarp, and some bricks on the edge..should I press down the substrate?

I've only heard of it being recommended for straw, not other substrates. Straw is pretty loose if not compressed. I've been using straw outdoor for a couple handfuls of beds so far (just set up another 2 today in shade with some ferns ) and i have had beds that were not compressed still get to the point of fruiting.

Weighing down helps to speed up colonization and helps the mycelium not expend as much energy on moving through the substrate is what i have heard.

ok,  I just burned up quite a bit of the straw from my yard..but I am sure there is plenty more. I will layer that on my hole. Its 6 inches deep, and 120 lbs of manure.

UPDATE: I layered the rest of the straw I could scrounge up from my cut grass. It was enough to cover the pit about 1-3 inches.

As of today, the pit is fruiting massively. There were some fully opened caps, the largest 4 inches in diameter. Most being about 2 inches. And then a dozen or so large pins, that I will let open and gather this afternoon.

Nice. Pics?

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, “What road do I take?”

The cat asked, “Where do you want to go?”

“I don’t know,” Alice answered.

“Then,” said the cat, “it really doesn’t matter, does it?”
