Hebrews 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. Birds are for eating. Fuck them as pets, they're fucking annoying. My grandma always had birds, she thought their constant squawking (which she called signing) was pretty. It's nothing but annoying. Fuck them.

I love parrots. I have a quaker now, and I used to have a son conure(same type in my sig). Not to mention I have 3 parakeets now.
I'd love to have a cockatoo, but they're hella expensive. Super cool birds. They're prone to depression and to self harm if you isolate them and don't give them any attention. But they're super sweet.
They also live like 40 years, so it's a life pet. Also...

yeah birds are like a mix between a cat and a dog, without the floppy tongues. Like a cat because they demand respect, like a dog because they can be super affectionate. but birds are smarter than both which is the neat part, they just scare super easy so their emotions get in the way of things a lot more

Birds are pretty damn smart. Socially, many birds have similar structures to human society. Love is something that many birds experience.
Also, quaker parrots have been known to develop dialects and traditions. They have spread throughout many places in the world, and each colony is different.
Many birds also utilize tools, and their environment in unique ways. Did you know crows can remember the faces of people? They also have been known to gossip.
Birds are hella smart.

Uhh... zappa, you're wayyy off. Like that ideology has been disproven for atleast half a century. Studies on bird intelligence has shown that many birds are incredibly smart. Most parrots have the intelligence of a 3 year old toddler. Certain species a bit more advanced.
But even pigeons have been shown to be smart. Even developing superstitions and solving puzzles.

Here's a video of a crow solving an 8 step puzzle.
Quote:
Feral populations are often descended from very small founder populations. Being as social and intelligent as they are, monk parakeets develop some cultural traditions, namely vocal dialects that differ between groups. In populations descended from a large number of birds, a range of "dialects" will exist. If the founder population is small however, a process similar to genetic drift may occur if prominent founders vocalize in an unusual "dialect", with this particular way of vocalizing becoming established in the resulting feral colony. For example, no fewer than three different "dialects" occur among the feral monk parrots of the Milford, Connecticut, metropolitan area.[
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monk_parakeet#cite_note-16 From the wikipedia page...
Quote:
kinner decided to go random on his hungry pigeons. He dropped food into the box at completely random times, independent of any behavior on the part of the pigeons. But the behavior of the pigeons, he found, didn't stay random. After a few drops of the food, the pigeons began exhibiting certain consistent behavior. One circled counter-clockwise, another spun around in circles; seventy-five percent of them exhibited some kind of odd behavior.

the intelligence goes something like this
humans orca's dolphins birds
everything else
birds are not only capable of words, they are capable of understanding their meaning.
dogs only understand risk/reward/discipline.

SO the monk parakeet forming dalects and cultural traditions isn't inherent of intellegence? Or the using of tools common amongst birds?
Or the solving of puzzles by a crow?
If you actually do research, you can find hundreds of studies about bird intelligence. Especially parrot intelligence. Many parrots learn to speak effectively to humans and understand human words.

Magpies can recognize themselves in a mirror. So they can recognize themselves as an entity. Very few animals can do that, and before it was thought only smart mammals could do it(humans, elehants, dolphins) but this shows that magpies can recognize themselves. And other birds have been known to pass this test aswell(pigeons can pass this test). http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/08/080818220557.htm
That means these birds are sentient.

Mimicry doesn't mean the bird doesn't understand... Parrots are extremely smart, and have things similar to languages. THey're learning and mimicking noises similarly as a baby does. As they mimic, they begin to understnad the meaning of certain sounds.
Although since they aren't the same species as us, they don't have the context to retain every single word and their meaning, many parrots learn enough words(and know how to use them) to effectively communicate to their keeper.
Parrots are sentient and self aware. Many parrots have problems with depression if they are isolated(and even sometimes when they aren't) and many self harm in these situations in something called "plucking".

it was proven birds can understand words. even with my bird ive seen it myself. I tell him to "step up" to get on my finger everytime. he learned the word and says it himself. but he uses it and applies it to DIFFERENT situations that apply to HIS perspective. He drops nuts threw the grate on the bottom of his cage, he'll go down there and can't reach them so he will say "step up" to try and get them to go onto his foot.
That means he fully understands the word and completely used it in a different situation applied to him and his perspective.

A bird may understand a few simple commands, but can they ever be said to fully grasp what it means to be a politically correct citizen in an age in which each conversation is rife with the potential pitfalls of racism and elitism? That is - I would say, the true essence of intelligence, of being a MAMAMMAL.

It's simple biology.
It is simple biology. Look at the brain to body ratio and then factor in how much has to be devoted to coordinating flying. No. Their song is no more impressive than mammalian mating ritual and their speaking is simple mimicry.

If I ever get one the first thing its gonna learn to say is, "What in the, I say what in the hell."
--------------------
Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Psalm 12:6 The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Hebrews 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. Revelation 3:11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

Quote:
The mirror test allows scientists to determine whether birds are conscious of themselves and able to distinguish themselves and from other animals by determining whether an animal possesses or lacks the ability to recognize itself in its own reflection. The European magpie is the only animal besides mammals that is shown to be able to pass this test

the mirror test is inconclusive, they passed most of the tests and others need more research to be certain.
Regardless I don't particularly find the mirror test to be a very good gauge of intelligence. Your basically saying hey look a magic trick, if you figure it out you're smart!
meanwhile you have birds that can count, and a dog that sniffs your ass and your trying to say the dogs smarter

Using dogs sniffing your ass as a sign of unintelligence isn't exactly conclusive in any meaningful way either... they can probably determine your mother, father, grandparents, everything you've eaten the last 30 hours, your favorite oingo boingo album, and your birthday just from sniffing your ass.

I have a cockatoo. Gotta be like 8 years old now, my parents bought her when I was like 10 or 11. Have to say, I love her, but its a tremendous responsibility. They require CONSTANT attention. Cockattos most of all, generally are the most affectionate species of parrot. They want to be held, cuddled, not locked in a cage, no even happy if you let it out to walk around. It wants YOU.
I suggest not buying a parrot unless you are ready for the responsibility of a lifelong commitment. Don't take that advice lightly.
