Hey guys! So me and my buddies just "made" a band together. We're all decent at out instruments, but we need a lot of pointers to play music together effectively and that sounds good.
We have 1 lead guitar(me), a bass, and a drummer. The bassist is gonna be the singer also. We might be getting a rhythm guitar player somewhere down the line. But anyways, any advice on how to play togther and write music and whatever?
We've had 2 band practices. Both times we'll get some sort of music going. But then we lose that flow and just play nonsence for another hour or so.

Just jamming with each other is gonna be your best bet at getting a kind of musical connection with each other. Besides that when I used to play in alotta different bands one guy would come to practice with a section of a song or just a single riff and we would bounce ideas off each other and build off that.

And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

I played guitar and bass in a couple of bands over the years - punk and metal mostly. I haven't been in a band for almost 10 years, though, and they never went anywhere beyond some local stuff. I'm not sure I'm the right person to give advice on any of this, but let's do it anyway.
:-)
If you guys don't have ideas for songs of your own, I think it'd be smart to start with cover versions. That'll keep you from just standing around and repeating the same riff over and over again, plus: you'll get to know each other musically; you'll figure out how quickly you get a grasp of riffs and song structure and you'll get an understanding of how songs work.
Here's Aerosmith's concept of songwriting from the 1990's, if I remember correctly.
intro, verse, bridge to chorus (no vocals), chorus, verse, bridge to chorus (with vocals), chorus, solo 1, solo 2, bridge to chorus in a higher key (with vocals), chorus, chorus, chorus, chorus.
There you go. All you need to do is adjust it down a notch to get to a decent punk song.
:-)
If you want to actually make money playing music, find a cool band nobody else covers and play their first album everyone loves. The most successful I ever was, was with a Wipers cover band. Drunk punks just love that stuff at 2 o'clock in the morning.
Not sure, I could help.

don't take that for a lack of love for guitar driven music, it's just that it's starting to wane. it was half a joke that I shouldn't have expected anyone else to get.
