After reading a few of the responses on the 1st page threads in S&T, I am not at all confident any of you are still around but I hope at least one of you is.

Can someone please elaborate on what the implications for this could be if it is verified?  I think I know just enough to realize this has the potential to significantly impact the field, but was hoping someone more knowledgeable than I could expound on what this all means and where it might lead us.  Lots of info to follow....

Uploaded pdf is the supplement from Science detailing methodology and apparatus.

The abstract from journal Science  (I would love to read the full paper if anyone has access  )

ABSTRACT

The ground state of quantum systems is characterized by zero-point motion. Those vacuum fluctuations are generally deemed an elusive phenomenon that manifests itself only indirectly. Here, we report direct detection of the vacuum fluctuations of electromagnetic radiation in free space. The ground-state electric field variance is found to be inversely proportional to the four-dimensional space-time volume sampled electro-optically with tightly focused few-femtosecond laser pulses. Sub-cycle temporal readout and nonlinear coupling far from resonance provide signals from purely virtual photons without amplification. Our findings enable an extreme time-domain approach to quantum physics with nondestructive access to the quantum state of light. Operating at multi-terahertz frequencies, such techniques might also allow time-resolved studies of intrinsic fluctuations of elementary excitations in condensed matter.

Signals from the absolute nothingness

Constance physicists succeeded in the direct measurement of vacuum fluctuations

What qualities does the vacuum, absolute nothingness? Physicists have so far gone on the assumption that it was not possible, the characteristics of nothingness - the ground state of empty space - to measure directly. A team of physicists led by Prof. Dr. Alfred Constance Leitenstorfer now succeeded by the world's leading optical measurement techniques just that. With light pulses that are shorter than half a light vibration in the investigated spectral region, they were able to observe so-called vacuum fluctuations. These fields exist even in absolute nothingness and in total darkness, so even if the intensity of light and radio waves completely disappear. The research results are of fundamental importance for the development of quantum physics. They shall be published in the prestigious journal Science; An online version will appear already on 1 October 2015th

The existence of vacuum fluctuations was already known in theory, it follows from the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. This means that electric and magnetic fields can never vanish simultaneously. Therefore even occur in the ground state of light and radio waves, so in total darkness, finite fluctuations of the electromagnetic field on. A direct experimental proof of this fundamental phenomenon was so far however as excluded. It was assumed that vacuum fluctuations always manifested only indirectly in nature, in a wide range of consequences. These range from the spontaneous light emission of excited atoms, for example, in a fluorescent tube to influences on the structure of the universe already during the big bang.

Assemblies for measuring electric fields with extremely high temporal resolution and sensitivity have it now possible to detect all presumptions despite vacuum fluctuations directly. World-leading optical technology and special ultra-short pulsed laser systems maximum stability form the basis of this study at the University of Konstanz. These technologies have been developed by the Constance research team itself, which has also drawn up a detailed description of the results on the basis of quantum field theory. The time resolution of the experiment lies in the femtosecond range - the millionth of a billionth second. Measurements were made with a limited only by quantum physics sensitivity. "We can see for the first time directly that we are constantly surrounded by electromagnetic vacuum fluctuation fields through this extreme precision," Alfred Leitenstorfer draws his conclusion.

"The scientific Surprising our measurements is that we directly gain access to the ground state of a quantum system without changing it, for example by reinforcing to finite intensity," explains Leitenstorfer who is surprised by the research results themselves: "It took us a couple years of sleepless nights brought - we had every opportunity possible to exclude interference, "smiles the physicist. "Overall, it turns out that our access to elementary time scales, ie shorter than an oscillation period of the study light waves, the key is to understand the surprising possibilities that opens up our experiment."

The project is funded as part of an "ERC Advanced Grant" of the European Research Council.

The figure shows a doctoral candidate Claudius Riek, lead author of the study, during the adjustment of its construction. Photo illustration of vacuum fluctuations Picture Explanation: vacuum fluctuations can be thought of as a basic variation of the light field even in the total darkness, the positive (red) and negative (blue ) areas are randomly distributed in space and constantly at high speed change - similar to white noise on a screen with no signal input. The rashes are greater, the smaller the space areas and times are, over which averages one meter. Therefore, the experiment of Riek et al scans. a minimal space-time volume from whose lateral dimensions .DELTA.x and Dy are determined by the strong focus of the scanning laser beam. The spatial length Az and duration .DELTA.t of femtosecond probe pulse (green) over the speed of light linked together and define the longitudinal extent. The fluctuation band .DELTA.E of the electric vacuum field then follows from a relatively simple mathematical relationship, only enter into fundamental physical constants in the four-dimensional scanning volume ΔxΔyΔzΔt except: Planck's constant h and the permittivity of free space ε0.
