California Drought- is this the beginning of a global climate hell, or a localized disaster?
    #22322706 - 10/02/15 09:11 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Is the current drought in California a sign of things to come? In ten years, will we see several states like this? Is this an indication of a spreading and accelerating global problem , or is this a localized catastrophe?

Will California have to be evacuated? What does this mean for America?

How much longer will the drought last? Or is this the new, permanent normal in the golden state?

Is there any hope for California?

Where will the people go, or where will the water come from?

Here is a great documentary by Vice on the subject:

drought is over.  It rained in august this year ffs.  by spring, they'll be letting water out of the overfilled reservoirs.

I am the source. i just told you that it rained multiple times in august in the LA area.  that never happens.  the water temps are well above the el nino index.  it's gonna rain like a sonovabitch this winter.

global warming causes global cooling, its the cycle of the earth as well ontop of it.  Thats why there is a cold spot growing in the ocean thats been in the news that is just northeast of america.

the ocean has a current that is caused partly by the differences in heat/cold, as the oceans warmed it broke/slowed that current which means it gets really cold now.

parts of the world are melting like crazy, other parts record highs.  but long story short, were all gunna die, except the canadians, i think they just go build more igloo's and eat penguins for a few years

i think we will fill up this winter but that doesn't mean we don't have another long stretch ahead of us, at least this did spur motion to desert and natural landscaping as well as people being a little more aware of water consumption, unfortunately the average socal person doesn't think about the environment until things get rough.

the desertification of the world is a shitty deal going around.

LMAOO

On a serious note; I live in cali and it rained a few times recently. I also don't think that it has to do with the weather as much as really poor agricultural methods. Moon you laready know too well that our agricultural system is basically set up to be unsustainable. As such, we are kind of just wasting a shitton of water (millions of gallons) on small amounts of beef etc.

there was/is, but its not an issue with the environment IMO. Most of the water being wasted is on inefficient agriculture. Not showering and things of this nature do very little. In this sense (so I understand it) it is more of an agricultural/political problem than a ecologial one

I definitely predict more and more desertification as time goes on. These droughts tend to kill a lot life, which destroys the land's water retention, and eventually turns things into deserts. I'm no environmentalist, so wtf do I know really?

My unprofessional opinion is that this problem will disappear for a year or two, then come back increasingly in waves until we sell California to Mexico.

It's just El Nino. In a year or two the drought will be gone. Then in a few more years it will be La Nina and California will have flooding and mudslides. Then a few more years and the cycle will repeat.

How so? If the ice caps are melting then there is more water liberated in the global system. Wouldn't this lead to more rain?

I meant localized in California. That's where the drought hit and that's the land that is losing precious water retaining life.

Idk really though, your idea of el nino/nina cycles seems likely too. Either way, shit's fucked up environmentally over there.

Yes it is. Climate's a-changin. So, it's hard to predict what will happen. Climate has never stopped changing though. It has always changed since the dawn of Earth. Anthropogenic climate change, that's a real thing IMO.

Yep, you can put silver iodide in the clouds and water droplets coalesces to it until the drops are big enough to precipitate. It is called cloud seeding.

ocean surface area stays the same, mostly. I mean coastlines are supposed to disappear by 20feet or so but on the grand scale of things Im going to go out on a limb and say that doesn't mean much to it.

the real problem is that once those ice caps melt, fresh water stops flowing, which means there's nothing to evaporate on land then(after it drys up).  So then were really fucked because a lot of the air moisture comes from land masses as they are like sponges, lots of surface area for evaporation that can cause rain

While practiced widely around the world, the effectiveness of cloud seeding is still a matter of academic debate. In 2004 the United States National Research Council released a report stating that to date, there is still no convincing scientific proof of the efficacy of intentional weather modification as it only has 30% or less chance of success.[7]

So hopefully we won't be dry much longer.

So far I've yet to find anywhere where drivers  can  though the roads in Washington that are designed for heavy rains with good middle of the road reflectors everywhere are definitely the most comfortable.

No, it's completely terrible in Socal. And I grew up in Nova/DC area.
A couple drops of precipitation hits the ground and californians drive like complete idiots, worse than normal
google maps looks like this after it rains

Every. Single. Time.

I live in the LA area, and i can vouch for this. People think that they can just drive as if it weren't raining, and everything will just sort itself out.
I could point out at least 5 places where at least one person will crash every single time it rains, and thats just counting the 101 and 405 freeways east and north of the interchange respectively
