It's interesting how many people here use keys (to attempt ID) but i only ever go by either memory or the fact that what I'm looking at has the right characteristics for a given genus. I can't be the only one?

Trust but confirm is my approach. I trust my memory - to a point - but usually opt for online tools to double check.

Good approach. As I learn, my eyes, memory and "instinct" muscles are being trained. But I like the availability and convenience of our confirmation tools. I know I'm learning allot. I appreciate all the feedback.

All the major keys seem to be for US genera and i don't know any UK ones. And i actually don't own any proper field guides or other bookes (i own 'Food For Free' - it's pretty useless for fungi). I learned everything from the internet (Largely from using this forum) and spending many, many hours observing mushrooms for real. I feel like a beginner still (and in relative terms i am. But not an absolute beginner.), and that's great. I learn so much from doing so little and it always feels new all the time.

I also like to peruse MushroomObserver.org on my cell phone and scroll to the pictures to where the name is still hidden and try to ID from that alone, it's like flash cards for mushrooms.

Thank you for your help Doctor - that description seems to fit the bill. With all of the rain we have been getting lately - the shrooms have really been coming on. Looking forward to finding some cool ones this weekend. Thanks to everyone for your help on this one.
