Habitat:
Where does it grow?  conifer woods North Wisconsin USA, 800 ft altitude
What does it grow on? soil

Gills:
Color brown, attached
see image

Stem:
Length 4cm diameter 5 mm
color white,
texture smooth with ring
see image

Cap:
Diameter  1 cm, color,
texture smooth, conical, convex
possible veil remnant
see image

Spore print color:
brown
see image

Bruising:not evident to me

Looks like a Cortinarius species.

many Cortinarius species-some edible and some not-I  was looking for more specific information- as none was forthcoming- I added pictures of the stem and veil-

It can be a hard genus to ID to species and some species are deadly (although not neccesarily that look like this) so maybe it's not an ideal contender for consumption without being completely confident about what you have.

The more I read on Cortinarius, the more I agree with you

I am also having a bit of trouble telling it from Agaricus- but I guess the veil is helpful
