Sleep Paralysis
    #22322399 - 10/02/15 07:21 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Have you ever experienced sleep paralysis? Tells us your experience!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3317522/?ref_=nv_sr_2

Psychelics usually work by introducing "woken-up" dreams streams in terms of allowing consciousness to flow. In a very similar way, the sleeping disorder known as "Sleeping Paralysis" triggers a similar experience, except the person dreaming is unable to move or talk while aware during REM sleep cycles (either at the moment of falling asleep or shortly before waking up).

WebMD's definition:
Quote:

Is Sleep Paralysis a Symptom of a Serious Problem?
Sleep researchers conclude that, in most cases, sleep paralysis is simply a sign that your body is not moving smoothly through the stages of sleep. Rarely is sleep paralysis linked to deep underlying psychiatric problems.

Quote:

Over the centuries, symptoms of sleep paralysis have been described in many ways and often attributed to an "evil" presence: unseen night demons in ancient times, the old hag in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, and alien abductors. Almost every culture throughout history has had stories of shadowy evil creatures that terrify helpless humans at night. People have long sought explanations for this mysterious sleep-time paralysis and the accompanying feelings of terror.

Quote:

Sleep paralysis is a feeling of being conscious but unable to move. It occurs when a person passes between stages of wakefulness and sleep. During these transitions, you may be unable to move or speak for a few seconds up to a few minutes. Some people may also feel pressure or a sense of choking. Sleep paralysis may accompany other sleep disorders such as narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is an overpowering need to sleep caused by a problem with the brain's ability to regulate sleep.
When Does Sleep Paralysis Usually Occur?
Sleep paralysis usually occurs at one of two times. If it occurs while you are falling asleep, it's called hypnagogic or predormital sleep paralysis. If it happens as you are waking up, it's called hypnopompic or postdormital sleep paralysis.
What Happens With Hypnagogic Sleep Paralysis?
As you fall asleep, your body slowly relaxes. Usually you become less aware, so you do not notice the change. However, if you remain or become aware while falling asleep, you may notice that you cannot move or speak.
What Happens With Hypnopompic Sleep Paralysis?
During sleep, your body alternates between REM (rapid eye movement) and NREM (non-rapid eye movement) sleep. One cycle of REM and NREM sleep lasts about 90 minutes. NREM sleep occurs first and takes up to 75% of your overall sleep time. During NREM sleep, your body relaxes and restores itself. At the end of NREM, your sleep shifts to REM. Your eyes move quickly and dreams occur, but the rest of your body remains very relaxed. Your muscles are "turned off" during REM sleep. If you become aware before the REM cycle has finished, you may notice that you cannot move or speak.

I see there are indeed several posts about the issue, mostly looking at it from a spiritual way, and it seems this was posted in the wrong forum lol. Better luck next time for my posts lol

Sleep paralysis is caused by something similar to our loss of movement during REM sleep. I remember one time I woke up from a nightmare and couldn't move. The room was dark and warped, unfamiliar and shifting...kinda like walking through the woods and the trees leaveless tress producing horrid facial expressions and eeirly creeping towards you.

Anyway I closed my eyes (possibly in panic) and went back to sleep. When I had to wake up in the morning, my body, particularly my legs and arms, felt incredibly weak.

Wow, sounds like a horrible experience... I once could not wake up (end of sleep cycle paralysis) and heard arguing and screaming voices, maybe not even talking to me, but all aroud me in the house. When I woke up I chased the entire house with a baseball bat, yelling: "Show yourselves, ya heathens!"

I've had it many times, both after waking up and before going to sleep. It usually only lasts at maximum about 30 seconds before my adrenaline kicks in and wakes me up, but sometimes its hard to tell how long its been.

In one particularly frightening instance, i recall being fully conscious, but abruptly my brain just decided to start sleeping, and i felt as if my consciousness was being forcefully pulled into a dream, which quickly became a dream/hallucination of me being dragged by a large gray dog by a rope attached to my foot. Luckily, i was able to wake myself up pretty fast.

This resembles very much how the barrier of the inconscious and conscious are broken while on hallucinogens...

I used to wake up unable to move, with some sort of creature staring at me.  Or I'd wake up in the night, look around the room, and be surrounded by a group of evil looking characters.  That was truly terrifying.

Did you ever notice that this state rarely leads us to pleasant dreams?

Yeah, I was having a lot of bad dreams at that time I think.  Not as much now.

It's a strange experience for sure and it gives away that the world is far more meaningful than most of us suppose.

I like your take, circastes. My take is that our brains are much more meaningful than most of us suppose, and thus our perception of the world is, as well!

People are studying psychedelics now more than ever as I see in psychiatric journals, but I wonder if they are connecting these dots as you say, DivineO, because I do think this is a great first step to lucid dreaming...

I've actually been trying to lucid dream for some time now, and gotten only few successes. When I first started trying I thought that my sleep paralysis could be used as a doorway to my dreams, and I'm sure it still could be, it just seems a lot harder to pull off then I imagined

Its kind of hard to guess which nights its going to happen, and when it does happen, its rare/strange enough that it almost always startles me awake :facepalm3:

Very true. This is why I believe studying the human brain should be the main scientifical focus of modern medicine.

I had it happen once about 10+ years ago. It was early morning. Maybe 5:30 AM or so. I was waking up from a dream but I never really "woke up" completely. It was like I was stuck between dreaming and being awake. My eyes were barely open and I could see a bit of light on my pillow. I tried as hard as I could to move but I couldn't move a muscle. It maybe lasted 15 - 20 seconds before it wore off. I had heard of sleep paralysis before but had never experienced it until then.

It's kind of the same feeling as when I'm tripping on shrooms really hard and I lose my volition to speak or move.

Isn't sleep paralysis where we get the term "nightmare"? Total opposite of pleasant dream. Something about a mare aka a horse sitting on the victim causing the motionless effect and terrorizes us in our dreams. Myth from the ancient times.

I've had it happen once or twice, maybe.
