i'm speaking completely based on personal experience. i was a total pizza face all throughout highschool and now i have virtually no acne at all.

I learned through trial and error, changing habits and all that, what works best for me. but could be different for other folks.

-drink lots of water
-eat right (lotsa veggies)
-don't touch your face
-use a natural face wash but don't over-do it
-don't use face wash with scrubs or skin irritants like salicylic acid
-occasionally it's okay to use salicylic acid to fight big spots or whiteheads (but don't over do it, don't re-apply more than once every other day or so)

that's how those "treatments" can give you more acne if you use them too much. benzoyl peroxide is basically the same thing as salycic acid. it works by drying up the sebaceous glands and killing all the excess oil and bacteria in ur pores.

if you use it too much on your whole face, ur whole face is gonna dry out. This will cause your skin to produce excess oil to overcompensate for the loss of moisture.

you want your skin to produce a healthy balance of oil. some of it is good for you but excess amounts will give you acne. and also, your skin will reactively produce excess oil in response to over-dry skin.

I've always had fairly bad acne but because it's so dry where I live I have a hard time using face washes regularly. I did find that using a face lotion works wonders though.

anything with saclyic acid only made acne worse for myself, it would seem to improve at first but ultimately would just dry my face out and irritate my skin.

stopped with acne facewash's and switched to noxema deep clean w/ a moisturizer a few years ago, and that works wonders.

I didn't read the thread besides skimming over and seeing this^ post....which I concur with.

I used to have really bad acne, still get an occasional pimple here and there, but nothing like it used to be. What I did....I improved my diet drastically, cut out lots of processed shit and drink lots more water. I stopped using acne washes, stopped putting a bunch of chems on my skin and stopped washing my face as often.

That's basically it....Changed my diet, drank more water, didn't wash my face with strong chemicals, washed it less often and with softer/gentle soaps. I think other factors such as stress and depression totally contribute to acne breakouts as well. And things like keeping one's bedding clean, lots of oils and bacteria build up on pillows. And drug use (even things like coffee, or cigarettes, can contribute to acne )

Kratom seems to have improved my skin over the years to, though my skin was already cleared up a lot before I started using it.

Lately I've been using these soaps, and I certainly notice the condition/complexion of my face and skin has improved over the past several months. I didn't get these soaps to improve my skin or for acne, just thought I'd try out a different soap, and over the months I've noticed they've nourished and healed my skin quite a bit.

I use this soap on my face once a day, and as body soap in the shower.

And recently started using this soap on my face about twice a week  (got sunburn recently so I'm waiting until my skin heals before I start using the black soap again, as it seems to dry out the skin a little bit...that other soap above is really moisturizing though)....

I had bad acne as a kid, tried tons of otc acne medications, pretty much everything except acutane, and what really worked was washing my face with Doctor Bronner's liquid hemp soap

I own an all natural/holistic skincare line.

I used to have crazy acne until I tweaked my diet and my skincare routine.

But, first things first: you are going to need to be PATIENT with this process. Give your self 30 days, at least, to let your skin heal. You have totally destroyed the natural oils on your face as well as the balance of bacterias. It may just continue to get better, or it may get worse before it gets better as your skin heals.

One of the absolutely WORST things you can do to oily/problem skin, is to use "oil free" products on it. Your skin NEEDS its natural oils, and when they get stripped away with harsh products, you just produce MORE.

When I healed my life-long acne, it was partly because I started moisturizing with OIL. Yep. Not kidding. Now my skin routine looks something like this:

Wash with my powdered/herbal cleanser
Spritz w/ rosewater
moisturize with my oil blend

Sometimes in the evening I oil cleanse instead.

Also I probably only "wash" my face a couple times a week now. Most mornings these days I just splash with cold water and then put a little oil on.

Once your skin starts to heal, a good aloe vera gel would be nice too, will help with any scarring.

My face used to be oily as fuck and COVERED in acne before I made these changes, and now it's balanced and mostly clear.

All the advice is pretty sound. If you are using washes and your face isn't clearing up and getting worse you may want to try just using hot water and regular soap. Avoid touching your face because your fingers are covered in bacteria. I don't think they really have much evidence of diet being really linked to acne. It's more hormonal and do to clogged pores from dead skin and bacteria.

Using an alum block after I shave has annihilated all traces of acne. Highly recommended, especially since a single block costs like $5 and lasts for years.

Indeed, it often seems to me that of all the good things in the world, the only ones humanity can claim for itself are stories and music; the rest, mercy, beauty, sleep, clean water and hot food (as the Ascian would have said) are all the work of the Increate. Thus, stories are small things indeed in the scheme of the universe, but it is hard not to love best what is our own—hard for me, at least."

If you can find authentic african black soap there is no better cure

But fakes have chemicals added to them which worsen acne

U might get a pimple here and there but don't mess with them, just let them be. They'll disappear on their own and probably won't appear again.

there are MANY chemicals in MANY commercial-brand soap products which can irritate/over-dry the skin. sodium lauryl/laureth sulfates are a major one. they only use it cuz it's cheap to mass produce. salysic acid and benzoyl peroxide can kill a zit but it does so by penetrating the pores with chemicals meant to destroy bacteria and oil (some of which your skin NEEDS in order to stay healthy)

It doesn't matter so much for the rest of your body but the face is very sensitive and fragile. if you're gonna get natural/organic anything have it be face wash

I sometimes get lots of pimples all in one area and they get super red and make my whole face look like shit. I switched to non astringent cleansers, and used witch hazel as a toner. It doesn't get rid of acne, but it kicked the redness in the ass. Now my face looks smooth and normal a good 95% of the time.

Another thing ive noticed is washing your hair every day. Unrelated to topic but to hygiene in general. Read an article it strips the little bit of natural grease it is supposed to produce. So your body produces WAY more. Why you wake up with sludge hair. I wash my hair about twice a week now. Last time was friday its monday now. And my hair feels like its just been washed. Its messy from sleeping. But soaking it for a moment and drying it off its far from greasy. Soft as fuck.
