Need info on salvia divinorum grown from seed and possible new variety...

I just started with my first salvia cutting about a month ago (wasson-hoffman) since she started putting on more growth I started putting her on my back porch to get some sun and rain. To my surprise, a few days ago, my 70+ year old neighbor Mike asked me if my plant was salvia divinorum! I was happy to tell him all about her...to my surprise again, he took me into his basement and showed me a large tent with several large salvia plants and many others in different stages of growth! He explained to me that he had grown 3 plants from seeds his wasson-hoffman had produced. Needless to say I asked what it would take to get a cutting from one I was particularly interested in and he pulled out a razor and gave me one! I am waiting to get more info from him on his plants and hear some more of his highly entertaining stories lol! I didn't notice any major difference between his mother plant and my wasson-hoffman, but I imagine this is still an important cutting I was given(since its mother was grown from seed) the only info I got was that he was calling his 3 seed grown mothers, Caroline #1 #2 and #3 ( we are located in NC) The mystery to me is even though these plants show no major difference, are they still valuable genetically to the species? I'd hate to call this thing a "Caroline #1" salvia divinorum if it is nothing special, but would hate more to call it a wasson-hoffman if I truly have something special here. I have no reason to believe Mike lied and have known for years he is an avid gardener...just not a salvia farmer lol! I don't know if just growing a salvia plant from seed is good enough to make this a new variety. Any helpful info is very much appreciated, and anyone looking to get a cutting will have to wait, mine isn't even rooted yet lol!

I don't honestly believe salvia seeds are rare. If he has been growing them for years and pollinating them by hand then there is a very good chance he has grown some from seed. IIRC, the chance of a seed being viable is around 2-10%, keeping it alive is a different story.
To answer your question, yes, it will have a genetically diverse genotype.
[edit] holy crap those trichomes on that right leaf! WOW!

I know! I was interested in this particular plant because it seemed to be pretty well covered lol! I have talked plants with him for as long as I've lived here but I never expected this from him. I will get over there again as soon as I can to get more info but he specifically said he hand pollinated and had to try a few times. He said getting seeds wasn't too difficult, getting the plants from seed was the hard part, basically exactly what you said. I think I might have found a good friend right under my nose here lol.

It's a nice plant to collect and its special in the sense that almost nobody gets viable seeds. And if you did it took a good deal of work.
But it isn't special in the sense that you could have a "super salvia" or anything. It's still just a salvia divinorum.
You may see slight variances with it but it's not like it's going to grow twice as fast, or make twice as many leaves, or be twice as potent.
So it's special but not special.
Probably the best part of this is you will have a plant that has no risk of experiencing difficulty due to gene senescence. Which now that I ponder it, may have something to do with the now sad rate of germination for this species. Perhaps each generation of seed from that plant and its progeny will have an increased germination rate...

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22269453 Heres a member who recently grew a salvia from seed. And take a look at how it's also covered in very many trichomes

Wow, what a story! That is amazing! I wish I had an awesome neighbor like that instead of the crazy medicated old lady that lives next door!
-------------------- One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. 'Which road do I take?' she asked. 'Where do you want to go?' was his response. 'I don't know', Alice answered. 'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'

I wonder if it has something to do with it being grown from seed? My wasson-hoffman clone puts out some pretty covered leaves every now and again, but this cutting and its mother are both covered... I figured if nothing else, it looked the healthiest, unless the trichomes are a defense mechanism of some sort.

yeah thats what I wad trying to get at. My thinking is the younger the genetics in a plant the more the trichomes. FOr example since the majority of salvia going around is from cuttings the genetics in those cuttings are pretty old (maybe this is why salvia grows slowly as well?) Seed plants havr their own set of genetics. Theyre biological clock has just started vs cloned plants of which the genetica arw who knows how old now.
