Please go easy, I have searched and searched and will provide and info. necessary:
Both pictures kind of suck but, the log was buried in heavy 'straw / compost - dead... Saw 1, flipped the log out - explosion.
I've never come across these and have been hunting a while.
Found today: Gold Country, CA

Habitat: Northern California, Dead log buried in straw / compost. Gills: Brown to purple, beige under Stem: Direct from log, longest = 1/2"
Cap: 180*
Please let me know if any info is needed.
Any guesses are better than mine, that way I can track down the ACTUAL strain sooner or later (I have a feeling I'll be made a fool of, which is fine, I understand.)
Spore print color: Too dry for a print
Bruising: Too dry to bruise
Other information: Being from FL, I got a nice waft of mushy air before I left, but I am unsure and being unsure does not help - I have searched and searched.

I dig your drawings, and that helps but I've been searching,
As far as your link, "Lastly, please note that this list is considered by no means complete or conclusive."
I tried to explain I do hunt, I've just never come across these and haven't that day aside from this one spot.
And searching,
Am I onto something at all - or should I be garbage bagging?
THEY SMELL PSILLY
If nothing else, can I get a general strain guess?

Going through ALL the resources, even Mykos list - still wide open.
Please, someone advanced have a look and let me know if they're trash.
They are interesting to say the least.

Yeah man not worth IDing unless your just curious. Google: Bracket fungus, Northern California. It won't be active if that's what your hoping for.

Much appreciated,
I think they could be Trametes versicolor - but I'm still not even sure.
Either way, active is what we look for but this is new to us so...
ALL INPUT IS WELCOME IN ANY CASE, and thanks brk.
