Fruiting Chamber Lighting and Tips?
    #22319133 - 10/01/15 01:15 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Hey all, I'm a student in university at the moment but have the time and resources to grow mushrooms, I hope to gain knowledge and experience with growing these incredible creatures.  In the future I hope to be able to grow many types of mushrooms for there medicinal, therapeutic and hunger fulfilling qualities.  I have decided to grow psilocybin mushrooms simple because they are most rewarding from a small batch, I have very limited space, so I ordered a syringe of golden teacher spores.  I will incubating and fruiting in the same box and both in my closet.  I plan to use perlite base when fruiting and a jar filled with water with an aquarium heater and air stone in it for humidity, temperature and O2 levels.  I was just curious about what lighting would be best I am going to purchase a 6500k CFL but I don't know which wattage and any tips for a newbie are EXTREMELY appreciated, Thanks, Andrew.

Hey I'm a new grower and new to mushrooming in general I hope to learn as much about mushrooms as I possibly can I may be going to graduate school for mycology in the future, but I'm 27 and need money.  But hell life's right in front of me, nothing to look forward to.  Best of luck to all.

The one thing you have right is the lighting, do get that CFL.  the 60w equivalents and the 100w equivalents are both good, but for the 100w equivs you want to make sure your light fixture can support it without overheating.  Fire is bad.

Aquarium heater, air stone, fruiting in a closet, all bad news.  Any fruiting chamber would be much better off in a room with natural air currents.  Air stones don't provide nearly as much humidity(Damn near none, actually) as the simple evaporation of mist off of the surface of the substrate, which, if maintained, is all the humidity they'll ever need.  Perlite is good, but the only setup that really makes use of perlite is a shotgun fruiting chamber, which you will want to build if you are doing cakes.  You also want to fruit AND colonize in room temperature.  68-75 is perfect.  Also, dunno what you've read but just in case, light is good during colonization too.

You don't need a fruiting chamber that meets all these crazy specifications using automated setups, passive systems are much better.  Mushrooms don't need a fruiting chamber to produce, humans do so they can get away with not misting.

But yeah, air stones are for oxygenating water, not creating humidity.  Constant evaporation is the real key to humidity being on target, and doing it that way, you never have to measure it.

Thanks a lot for the response, really helpful it is good to actually get feedback on the subject, and yes I will set-up the chamber shotgun style but was also looking for ways to keep O2 and humidity levels as high as possible.  I will definitely fruit out side of the closet I don't get much direct sunlight anyway.  As for humidity when you say misting does that mean misting the perlite with water.  I'm not trying to avoid labor each day I probably wont want to keep my hands off of the fruiting mushrooms but I feel like a more constant supply of fresh O2 is better than just taking the top off of my box and misting and pushing air in.  But it is hard without drying the environment, if you have experimented with any other methods than the PF TEK standard or any slight deviations that you think might improve the happiness and healthiness of the mushrooms I will be growing it would be tremendously appreciated.  Thanks again for the responses, super helpful, Andrew.

If you're doing PF cakes, the SGFC is the most efficient way of fruiting.

So I will stick to the shot gun method as tightly as possible and record my results/hope for the best but if you did those drawing there incredible is that colored pencil or pastel or paint markers?

Also do you guys thing a small weak fan set on timer to turn on for an hour or two a day over the course of the day would assist in FAE and evap. if placed directly under the chamber?

Sorry for the questions but I really needed some answers I feel like I see contradictions all around this topic and I not just on the internet.  If the temperature of my apt. is around 65 will I need some sort of heating?  Really appreciate all the feedback, thanks again.

They only require diffuse ambient light but they do benefit from 2000lux an hour for 12-16hr a day. Very similar to oysters in regards to light during fruiting according to TMC.

I had my cakes sitting in a sgfc for a couple of weeks with just background lighting, they pinned and more or less stood still, very slow growth. Got a CFL and a car inspection light holder, so it could rest ontop of the tub; the growth went into overdrive.

So a nice CFL is definitely worth investing in, and do you thing I could just screw the bulb into as desk lamp and position that on top of the FC?  Also the top of the Sterlite container I will be using is a dark gray should I cut a square out of it and put plexi-glass in, thanks again, Andrew.

all that matters is that the bulb is 6500K

you can use a utility lamp or just a lamp

use syranwrap instead for a clear top

:whathesaid:

I have used both tube flouros and cfl's.
With the CFL I use one of those $5 clip on shop lights with the round aluminum reflector. Works great!
