Any recommended reading on electro-magnetism?
    #21296785 - 02/19/15 02:35 AM (8 years, 11 months ago)

I have fallen behind my intellectual friends in the "standard sciences." Which I would consider, physics, astronomy, that sort of thing.

I was hoping somebody on here might know of a good learning resource for such topics? I've tried just sitting down and reading a textbook, but those things are often scattered and dull. If you simply know a well written textbook on electro-magnetism, that'd be ideal.

Magnetism and space related physics are my main interests. (as far as difficulty level goes, I've only take a couple college level courses.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QED:_The_Strange_Theory_of_Light_and_Matter

I came across this book. Claims to give plenty of real world examples of the phenomenon it describes. (something that always annoys me when I try to read about electricity or the like. They talk about some weird law that you can't easily relate to the world around you.)

Superforce by Paul Davies is an easy read and a great introduction to particle physics and grand unified theories.

I would also read Richard Feynman's book, but it isn't as easy to read.

thats sounds like good advice.

I should start with the basics, re-establish a good foundation, and THEN branch into my specific interests.

You should find, though, that nobody really knows how electromagnetism works. Is that a scary thought? Well, it's true. The things Feynman explains in his book do not make any sense, and they are unexplainable. You will find similar things in Davies book. We know the properties of electrons and the effect of electromagnetic force, but what an electron really is, what electricity really is, where it comes from and how it effects matter at a distance, nobody knows. They will only tell you what happens, not how it happens.

if you want to know some practical knowledge that will help conceptualize a lot of this stuff look up stuff about fluid flow through porous medium under an electric field, aka electrokinetics. there are a lot of good youtube videos on it.

sounds perfect!

I just realized, I could probably just torrent these books. But i guess its probably not that spensive

QED by Feynman is a great book.  Maybe my favorite pop-science book.  I don't think that it is what you are looking for though.

Electromagnetism is a very mathematical subject.  You will not be able to scratch the surface of it without competency in vector calculus and differential equations.  Usually the text books that stop short of requiring calculus are called "college physics".  A standard college physics text requires algebra and trigonometry and will have sections on charges, electric fields, magnetic fields as well as circuits and electrical components.  But I wonder if that is in fact what you are interested in, electrical circuits and components (rather than theory of electromagnetism)?

The Feynman lectures can be found online (not the easiest read, but at least it is for free):

Otherwise Khan Academy has some nice videos on physics and cosmology:

I do not enjoy the subject particularly.  And reading is an abysmal way for me to learn.  I took a Maxwellian physics course and didn't even crack the textbook and managed to ace it.  I got a lot out of listening to lectures and, as much as I didn't enjoy them, the labs.  I think if I were in your place and actually wanted to learn about the subject without getting college credit, I would do what others have recommended and check out some free online video classes.

Electricity/magnetism are pretty complex subjects.  Don't feel bad if you're having a hard time.  I spent 50+ hours studying it and I still feel like my understanding is really basic.

If I were to do it for pleasure I think I would start with the broader concepts and theories to wrap my head around, and then progress to the nitty gritty math.

You'll learn a lot about electromagnetics by building your own electromagnet. They're ridiculously easy to be build, and pretty fun to play around with. This guy Mehdi Sadaghdar makes some awesome videos about electrical sciences, here's a cool one where he uses electromagnets to make a railgun:

I concur with the Feynman lectures. My engineering physics (Mechanics/Thermodynamics) GTA suggested it as a good alternate text for our book. I didn't use it personally, but I have heard many good things.

The Feynman Lectures are good, but I would not suggest them for an introduction to E&M.  For one they are too advanced for somebody not formally studying the subject.  They require calculus, differential equations and linear algebra.  But even for physics and engineering students they are not the best intro text.  They are great for somebody who has already studied the subject and has a grasp of the concepts and math but wants a deeper and different perspective.

They are great for rounding out and expanding existing knowledge, not for an introduction.

Don't start with electromagnetism, start with really interesting stuff like relativity so it clicks as interesting worthwhile study. You can go wtf that really happens when you go that fast? Search torrentz.eu for physics PDF collections.

I'd like to suggest that you consult a textbook again, such as this one, and maybe supplement your studies with free videos, such that those provided by MIT.

The deepest understanding of electromagnetics requires that you have an intuition of how they behave from a physics standpoint. There are no shortcuts.

Tesla was an absolute genius; far beyond his time. Without his theories, designs and prototypes (most were taken from him, leaving him no recognition) our society's technology would be years behind where we are today.

It's sick how little recognition this man received both during and after his life.  Edison is a complete scumbag in my opinion (he still receives credit for innovations people who worked for him created).  Tesla was far from the only person he screwed over; however Edison was sociologically obsessed with trying to crush Tesla.

Edison laughed and mocked Tesla when he requested the agreed upon terms and payment for creating working prototypes for Edison.  Tesla then quietly left his position and created the cheaper significantly more efficient AC distribution system that we use today(It could be made even more efficient; but that's an entire subject of it's own.)

The cost of Edison's DC distribution system was ridiculous and extremely cumbersome. (Tesla designed many components at Edison's Request) Tesla's lower cost AC distribution grid began to be adopted everywhere where power was being generated, with the exception of NYC as they well balls deep in Tom's BS.  So Tommy boy began publicly electrocuted countless animals to discredit Tesla model; as sickening as it was obviously it didn't work.

I could go on, Tesla is the shit!  I say is as we are still adoption his designs today.  Some may have been available to more great minds if J. Edgar Hoover didn't order the all notes, prototypes, schematic, etc... to be seized immediately following his death.

Back to the topic of electromagnetism; are you looking for something that cover electricity and magnetism from the ground up at the college level?  One of the most complete books I know that covers many aspects of electricity including Electrical Engineering is The Art of Electronics.  The third and final edition was just released this past April.  It's neither a dull or difficult read; it belongs in a category all of it's own.

The first edition began as bound notes for a Physics class at Harvard University.  That short summation in no way does it justice; I would elaborate on it but I have to run.  I haven't finished reading the 3rd edition; only got it a month ago. There's a ton of info on it online; you can download a sample chapter from the 3rd; have only seen torrent bootlegs for previous editions. Check it out!
