Yes, but I take most of my classes at a suburban campus of my university where I would say most students are first or second generation immigrants anyway, mostly from various parts of Asia and the middle East. There are some black people but not in my program so much. At the downtown campus the demographics seem to be similar but with more white people.

growing up, most of my friends were black or brown (latin) but sadly I lost contact with them when I left school forever ago.

If somebody became friends with a black person JUST because they are black, and for no other reason whatsoever, is that somehow more racist than having no black friends? "Oh theres a black person, I better go be friends with him so noone thinks Im a racist."

it's not necessarily more racist, it's more like tokenism.

But a straight up racist is at least being honest. Why does the fellow I referenced feel an obligation to befriend a black person. What are they trying to hide? Like if a gay dude went on and on about how much he loves vaginas.

In all seriousness though I don't think it's necessarily racist at all not to have any friends of ethnic background x. Trying to befriend someone purely in order not to appear racist is definitely insecure and self-serving, but I don't think it necessarily indicates racial prejudice either.
In my case I'd say it has everything to do with culture and nothing to do with a belief in inborn racial characteristics. Maybe it's just easier (i.e. laziness) to open up with people who have a common cultural background with you, since you don't have to worry about inadvertently making some faux pas out of ignorance of their culture. The same thing can apply even with people of pretty much the same ethnic background as you I think. If I was at a party where everyone else was Mormon or Jehovah's Witnesses or something, happening to have a common ethnic background with them would be completely irrelevant to the awkwardness I'd experience.

Yeah just one and we call him token. Just kidding but I always check to make sure he's not behind me when I tell a racist joke. Just kidding again do you want me to count them on Facebook? I moved to a whiter city but I grew up in a pretty mixed part of Canada's biggest city. Most of the black folks there are immigrants from Carribean and their children so I heard a fuck of a lot of bomoclots growing up. You get used to it. You even get used to getting mugged, it builds character. It toughens you up. Like when all your friends and everyone passing by act like they don't see it, it's totally like when Debo is robbing them in "Friday".
