I took a survivaliss outdoor class once. They taught us whats up. Find a wide base tree. One with a divet or hole in the ground. So you are beneath ground level. This will help keep you warm via earth. Simply start stacking good sized logs at an angle, over this hole, up against the tree. Start hucking pineneedles ALL OVER the logs you just put together. Then find vegetation, and cover the pine needles. The pine needles will wedge between the crevices, helping wind flow, and the vegetation will reduce wind chill.
This is a complex, big one, and doesnt make use of an indentation in the ground, and chooses not to hug the tree, but instead to prop on a branch. But it gives ideas.

If you want something warm, you could make a scout pit. They're pretty cool to just have, and they're pretty damn warm. You can even have hot stones or a small fire at one end for warmth. http://www.wildwoodsurvival.com/survival/shelter/scoutpit/ygas.html Here's a picture before they add the dirt on top. The link has all the steps.

Stack sticks on top of sticks staked into the ground over with sticks over those sticks with leaves on top of and woven into those sticks.

Make a lean-to.. depending on your location, time of year the 'ingredients' will vary a little but the principle is the same. Bring lots of shit you can make fire with,(lots, overkill type of lots, bring a lot of things to make fire, is what I'm saying) and then make a lean-to. Opt for making a 'cot/bench' type of platform so you can be raised a foot or so off the ground. If it's going to be cold line the interior with space blankets so they reflect the fire you will have at the enterance etc. That should get you by for awhile assuming a bear doesnt eat you. Other than that, different gauges of rope, lotta dry foods.. a good knife, hatchet, and wood maul. You said something about a chainsaw..assuming you're driving in, that gas etc, would be real nice...the fucking hilton kind of nice.
Make a little rack to hang your clothes so they can dry out by the fire..clear out all the debris on the ground, things like that. You're gonna need water. Other than that, you should be good to go.
All that list depends on whether you're walking in or driving but, food, water, shelter warmth, security, and tools. Id opt for having a pistol (and a rifle if you can).. thats about it..
Other than that, dont do anything stupid like getting yourself killed, and take care of your feet!

...a bottle of fine whiskey is also optional, but dont let it go to your head.

Best fucking advice ever ! brought me trusty boomstick , the chainsaw , some gas and the 4x4 ( cannabis is a given hehe never leave without it ! )
Me and two friends once wandered into the forest with nothing but a half ounce worth of shroom tea 500mg 4 aco dmt, bag o weed n hash n all the fixins. case of beer few lighters in minus 30 celcius or colder ( we had winter jackets on , jeans with nothing but boxers under it and winter boots with the laces undone like a good ol hoser ) We managed to make a fire ( a fucking big one at that ) and it was one hell of a good fire ill tell ya
will update the status on our trippin cabin in the next week or so
