unidentified panaeolus any help appreciate immensely
    #22316942 - 10/01/15 12:06 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Habitat:
Where does it grow? found in Illinois on the well-manicured lawn outside a public baseball field near a sidewalk where I normally find panaeolus cinctulus and dog-walkers

gills:
attached, adnate, medium close, very dark brown almost black etc.

Stem:
Length: 50-65mm, diameter 1.5-2mm, color: grayish cream, smooth fibrous yet fragile, hollow, cylindrical with vibrant blue mycelial cells at base

Cap:
Diameter: 20-25mm, color: grayish cream, texture smooth with slightly shiny thin fibrous layer over pileus, half-spherical at maturity

Spore print color:
tar black

Bruising:
Color that the mushroom bruises, with age graying at margin on cap and same at base, a slate gray.

Other information:
smell not significant, taste: way better than cinctulus, appetizing.  Have not done thorough microscopy but did take a peek at the spores. They appear smooth, by and large citriform with an apical germ pore though it did appear some had an eccentric germ pore. variations in shape included tear drop and I suspect at different angles I saw subglobose and flattened ellipsoid shapes.

Thanks guys for your help.  I was thinking olivaceous based on macroscopic details, but I don't currently have the ability to measure features or photograph microscopic images, so I am mainly hoping for some direction as to what this might be  Thanks again. Happy shrooming!

Sorry I forgot to post the spore prints.  I know they came out a little funky, but I feel they at least present an accurate image of the spore color

Wow they look potent

Look like cinctuculus or olivaceous to me, leaning towards the former

I hope somebody with a lab sees this

Panaeolus cinctulus. Check the spores in H20 under 1000x magnification using a microscope with a digital camera.

Hmm.  I'll try to take a photo of the spores under the microscope with my digital camera.  I have to say I did try this already with poor results, but perhaps with the light of day I'll have better luck as I'm more awake.  Additionally, I have seen cinctulus without concentric rings on dry days, but the consistency of the cap seemed different to me (less fragile and less gelatinous, also the stipes had no hints of red or brown and I've never been lucky enough to witness such blue mycelia on the base of a cinctulus.  I don't know if any of this info helps, but I hope. They are definitely better tasting than the cinctulus I normally find... ;-) I'll be back after attempting to photograph these spores and checking the spot for more.  I took the liberty of shaking some up in a bottle with water and spraying them all over the area where I found them in hopes for more. Fingers crossed.

I have to apologize.  I cannot get this camera to photograph through the microscope.  I tried and tried.  My camera just can't seem to understand it needs to focus through the scope and only will focus on the lens.  I tried numerous settings and I am a photographer lol.  Am I missing something?

Just consider them potent Cinctulus... if you want to go all mycological over a panaeolus good luck... it takes for ever...

Peace out, and good find : )

Those look like classic olivaceus to me. I have a lot of experience with them. Nice find!

RIP Matt, your friendship and your contributions to the world of fungi will be missed. Unfortunately we never got to hunt together.

Agree they look more like olivaceous than cinctulus to me.

Sorry for the delayed replies.

Lol.  I sorta do wanna go all mycological over these because olivaceous is not recorded in Illinois to my knowledge and my nerdliness really wants to know if I found something special so to speak, but you are right... It's a lot of work and currently I don't have to proper tools to verify measurements, so I don't know if I could figure it out.

My cell is broke so I can't try photographing microscopy on that, unfortunately.

Thanks for all ur input guys.

PS I've looked at the same locale for more, but haven't found any yet.  The weather has been changing, so perhaps it's that or maybe they are getting mowed.  Oh yes and then there's the punching holes to aerate the grass and soil.  They just did that and I've read that can slow growth.  We'll see.  I'm just hoping for a little bit more mushroom weather.  ttyl -
