How do you tape a hole
Spawned 6qt oats 1qt rye to cvg today, and have another smaller pf tek - bulk tub both trying this out, sounds like a no brainer to me

Anyone finding that top poly is not needed at all in <70F >50%rH conditions? Just fruited a tub and got no fuzzy feed, no symptoms of CO2 buildup, which is a first time for me. Some air movement in the room, less than a fan by a good margin.
I think I'll try the azur method colonizing with top poly then removing it when the knotts start to come in next time.
--------------------
I spawned some popcorn casings and had double-overlay cause I didn't put enough hydrogen peroxide in my automated aquarium mister. I only got one mushroom so I cut off the head part where the seeds fall from and put it in a jar of LC and sprayed it all over a tin of PF cakes I made with gravel, cardboard, and bisquick in my microwave. I think it will be good cause B+ is so potent. Triggered yet? Only a square would say "a cube is a cube."
No, this does not look right...

This is all very interesting. When I first started growing bulk, I thought taping the holes was dubious and I just basically spawned to fruiting conditions. My results were always adequate and never had any issues with molds. When I started allowing subs to consolidate before fruiting, I started having Trich issues around that same time...
I may have to go back, if it ain't broke don't fix it, right?

Did you follow Azur's spawning method with the top layer of coir or did you case it? Seems like the middle of that sub isn't colonized, is that a big deal or is just the casing not being eaten up (a good thing?)

Can't speak for BL but sometimes the top layer doesn't fully colonize before it starts pinning.

Yes now that I think about it my last tub I did never colonized the top layer much at all, I'd thought it had stalled but couldn't get myself to get rid of. Luckily for me it started spitting out fruits, sporadically and without any sort of flush but I eventually got a QP out of it so I just threw it away. Didn't have a dehydrator so every surface in my room was covered in fruits with a fan on them...not exactly ideal. I was using Frank's 12 step program at that point though, don't think I will again, sub came out WAY too wet.

Your sub was coming out too wet? What would you say was the cause of this, out of Frank's steps? I've had a pretty good amount of success from Frank's steps myself. Maybe you didn't squeeze out enough liquid from the sub?

You shouldn't have to squeeze anything out of the sub.

Buckettek is supposed to hydrate it to capacity, not over.
Coir bricks varry in weight by at least up to -100g, if not more. That's a large difference in water capacity, at least .6qt This should be mentioned much more than it is.
Different brands of coir also have different field capacities IMO. Same with different types and brands of vermiculite. So there is a decent bit of varriance built in.
IMO you should start dry, then feel it, and tune it in in later grows. Adding water to hydrated coir can be deceptive IMO, though you can always add more verm to fix that.

I followed Frank's pasteurizing in jars, so whichever prep lead up to that. I honestly am not only blaming his tek ha, they're all pretty much the same anyway but I ran out of verm and didn't think to use more coir. First grow, thought the ratio was SUPER important for whatever reason. Came out too wet and just said fuck it.

So that's typically what I do, but I guess what I'm asking is: 'what's making them too wet?' If the tub is dialed in correctly, then it should sort itself out later. The subs I've had that were too wet were actually contaminated in the end. I think I can trace that to improperly prepared WBS, though I'm not sure.

This thread isn't about dialing in tubs. It's about how if done properly, the tub dials itself in. Medium poly. Plus, though I've never done the bucket tek, it's pretty elementary and doesn't warrant conversation.
