Top 7 nonrecreational OTC drugs when you are sick.
    #22315700 - 09/30/15 06:49 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

OTC so no script. Use generic names if possible since we are an international crowd. Tell us what it does.

1.acetaminophen/paracetamol (all round analgesic)
2.naproxen (potent analgesic/antiinflammatory that works 12 hours)
3.cetirizine (24 hour anti allergy including skin rashes)
4.omeprazole (anti stomach acid)
5.bisacodyl (laxative)
6.dettol/chloroxylenol (skin & surface desinfectant)
7.chlorhexidine 1% tincture (wound desinfectant)

Honey (is sterile)
Ginger lemon and honey tea (cures throat)
Going for a walk (helps a snotty nose)
Warm glass of lemon and water in the morning (Kickstarts metabolism and fixes pH of stomach)

I know these sound like bs home remedies but the glass of water and lemon and the honey one can be empirically proven

I generally don't take them ever.  Clove oil for a tooth ache.  Maybe an antibiotic cream on a particularly nasty cut.  That's pretty much it.  I kind of don't believe in OTC painkillers.  I think they let you do shit that will prolong or even exacerbate the injury.  I prefer to just heal.

Also almond oil and dexpanthenol is really really good for calluses, scars and other kinds of skin related things

Everybody should have a strip of acetaminophen in their house. Not as much for pain but it can force down a sudden life threatening fever effectively. It literally saves lives that way.

I drink spearmint tea when I'm sick. I don't know if it actually works but I pretend it does.

Really?  That has never come up in my life or the lives of anybody I know.  Maybe a child or two got a scary fever but never an adult.

1.Hot Toddy's (When stuffy at night)
2. Duc L'Orange (A shot of Gran Marnier followed by a tablespoon of honey for sore throat)
3. Fire Cider (or Russian Grandma as my SO calls it)- Apple cider vinegar infused with turmeric, garlic, onion, black peppercorn, lemon, orange, habanero pepper, and rosemary (Great for cold/flu season. Will drain you out like nobody's business.)
4. B.C. Powder
5. Catnip and Chamomile tea
6. Rosehips tea
7. Eucalytpus E.O in an oil-diffuser

It happens nonetheless. Thank God we have been spared serious influenza outbreaks since the 70s or so but its always possible to catch a vicious bug.

Naproxen as the most effective anti-inflammatory
Doxylamine as the most effective sleep-aid
DXM (dextromethorphan) as the most effective cough suppressant.
Caffeine as both the most effective anti-allergen and stimulant
Ginger as the most effective anti-emetic
Valerian Root as an anxiolytic and very good sleep-aid
Alcohol for morale

As for cuts, I use the udder cream Bag Balm

[Pic in below post]
Contains an antiseptic, and is reportedly very good for even slow-healing wounds like bed sores and puncture wounds.

Omeprazole is pretty great. Knocked out an ulcer I had in a couple weeks.

I'm honestly pretty disappointed with most otc drugs, most don't work as well as they should, especially the decongestants.

I agree with DB's list, though, besides naproxen which I've never taken.

Cetirizine is great for allergies including skin allergies (also sunburn) and Naproxen, yea that just kicks ass. Works 12 hours so you can get a night of sleep.

In some countries its prescription and yea, its in a completely different league than acetaminophen.

:yesnod: I've broken a few bones and it works drastically better than acetominophen and ibuprofen.  Unfortunately cetrizine and psuedo ephedrine never helped my seasonal allergies much. Both much better with coffee. Ephedrine works pretty well, especially with coffee, compared to psuedo. I've heard others feel the opposite though.  Slightly worse than coffee, but I don't have too much experience with it. I've heard others feel the opposite though.

@Hex
500mg pills are available by prescription here, but most know it as the brand Aleve (200mg pills)-

I never really had much expectation from OTC drugs, but I completely understand why someone could feel underwhelmed compared to scheduled drugs. Needless to say, salvia surprised me :tongue2: Most is surely my fault for not researching (when Shroomery and Erowid existed), but I was barley a teenager and careless :facepalm3:

Amended my earlier post to include Bag Balm for wounds, contains an antiseptic and is reportedly very good for even the slowest healing bed sores and punctures. Also the best moisturizer by far, miles ahead of plain Vasoline and Carmax lip balm for chapped lips-

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)

1. Tums... Essential to my life at this point
2. Acetaminophen
3. Nasal spray
4. Throat spray

That all I ever take and starting from #2, I take them once every 3 years... I hate medication.
