hey hey...
so im driving a long haul next week... from cape town to somewhere 18 hours way... planning on leaving at 2am and having my gf drive the first dark bit (as i cant see well in low light) but i want to be awake during this time as well as the time im driving,ja obviously.. so i want to have a really good and EARLY sleep...was thinking maybe valerian root extract? Wont be taking any chemicals along due to the distance.... need to do the trip in 1 day due to a car full of bunny's.
recommendations, tips, what to do...?? never done this far at once...

I've been on long road trips before. Longest I've ever drove in a single go was from Yellowstone (WY) to Dallas. It's about a 22 to 23 hour drive, and I drove the first 20 hours of it before letting my Dad takeover. Probably not a thing I would advise, though. 20's a bit much and can be dangerous.
A sleep aid the prior night will be fine. Just try to get as close to a full night's sleep as possible, and then let your GF handle the first few hours. 14 or 15 hours driving is more than doable -- I've done drives around that time length multiple times.
Listen to a lot of music & radio, and make frequent stops. Stop and eat somewhere. Stop at rest stops for piss breaks. Just getting out of the car and stretching can do wonders. Oh, and have stuff to steadily snack on. Eating and getting a little energy into you along the way will help keep you from tiring.

Valerian can help. It's not that strong though. It's more of a better than nothing remedy imo. Xanax would be ideal as it has such a short half life. If you can't get xanax take 50mg diphenhydramine (benadryl), that will make most people sleep like a baby

Agreed on snacks. I've driven for 20+ hours as well and let me tell you, a bag of gummy bears did more wonderful things than any energy drink I slammed in those rides. If you feel even a slight bit tired, fucking pull over man. I've had too many close calls, literally falling asleep at 80 mph on the highway only to wake up because of rumble strips.

I once took what was expected to be a reasonably long trip but nothing too insane. Maybe 10 hours. But the fucking water pump broke and I had to replace it and then something else fucked up and it ended up being a 20 hour trip. I was damn near hallucinating by the end of it

I've taken a xanax multiple times before a long drive (not driving obviously) and simply woke up in the other state. It almost feels like teleportation but the drive was only like 6-7 hours. It's quite the feeling.
If I was you and only had access to valerian root I'd take like 15 of those capsules and 3 benadryl or unisom. You should be out like a light.

In 1975, I once drove from Denver to Atlanta stopping only for gasoline & a small bite to eat. I was pretty amped-up on Dexedrine.
