Rye grain or Forage Oats?
    #22313471 - 09/30/15 11:18 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

So I've recently played around with rye I like it a lot better than WBS. But I can only get rye grain at a local "expensive" store for around $1.50 p/lb. Don't like going in the store and that's the only thing I buy while I'm there....yeah...the looks at whispers at the register.

But then the other option buying online and paying shipping makes it more expensive. As much as I like the rye I need something more economical. I *almost* went back to using cheap WBS but I can't do it. Today I went to the store for dog food...yeah, the dogs gotta eat too...and  had the WBS in the cart too. Then I found a big 50 bag of forage oats for $26 like this http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/plotspike-forage-oats-50-lb

basically this costs 1/3 p/lb compared to the rye grain. Any thoughts on using this for spawn? I can't see inside the bag but assuming they are not rolled oats but guessing they are whole.

Here's a cheaper bag they have too but the other for .50 cents a lb is fine by me.

Right on Bohdi thanks! The 44 page thread...guess if I get hit by a lot of rain this weekend I'll have some time to dig through it all.

I'll go with that brand then. Looks like may take a few times with it to get the best simmer time without bursting it. Glad I put the 20 lb bag of  WBS for $7 back on the shelf today. And I would spend $7+ to go get 5 lbs of rye today so I know which route I'm going.

The Producers Pride oats will work just as well as the buck forage oats and are about $10 cheaper. A co-op will be cheaper if there is one near you. I pay $38 a barrel from a local farmer.

Hey $15 for this bag of whole oats I just got is way better than $75-$100 for the same amount of rye if I got 50 lbs so I'm going to roll with this. Just pulled out some handfuls and put it in a colander and shook it to see how dusty it is...pretty dusty. Guessing you soak it overnight like you would other grains if you're into soaking? I'm going to rinse some and let them soak over night and boil in the morning. Just a test run with a small amount and see how the hydration goes. Seems with WBS I always had it over wet or over cooked. And with the rye I'm not sure I got optimal hydration even soaking overnight. As cheap as this is I can play with a few quarts to see how it works out.

oats are the shit. i just soak mine for 18 hrs and then dry them out a bit on a towel. no need for boiling or nothing. there are plenty of methods out there and oats are one of the easiest. if you have the time then just letting them soak anywhere from like 18-24 hrs is as easy as it gets for me.

No boiling? You're making it sound too easy! :slowreaction:

Has to be a catch somewhere. :ohyou:

I soaked a couple quarts worth last night. They've sat maybe 14 hours. I like how they have soaked up so much water as the rye grain really didn't do that as well. I couldn't be happier with a $15 bag...it will be a looong time before I have to buy another bag lol.

My other jars I started were rye and have a couple almost ready to start G2G and I'm assuming it shouldn't be any prob using a little rye spawn to mix with the oats....stoked here. :crazy2:
