Mysterious contamination bacteria/mold?
    #22312922 - 09/30/15 08:26 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Hi guys,
I have had this type of contamination now many times. I usually do small pf tek bags and sometimes I get this type of contamination. It appears like mushroom mycelium but it is not as white, the vermiculite around it becomes apparent, instead of all covered in white. I usually happens when the colonization process is halfway finished, the cake starts smelling moderately bad towards the end of the colonization phase. Sometimes it has happened that the cake colonizes completely and it smells good, but if I leave it sitting for a long tim, say 2 weeks, it starts producing this bad smell and when I fruit it, it apparently attracts green molds and cobweb mold. I once was able to fruit a cake like this, but it only lasted 1 flush and then contaminated. It is not cobweb because I know how cottony and fluffy it is, and this one is not. In the picture I attach you can see the healthy mycelium on one side and the one I describe on the other. Right now this cake still doesn't smell bad.

Is it possible for bacteria to attract molds? I think this could be some type of benign bacteria that permits the mycelium to colonize but it grows unhealthy and when exposed to oxygen it makes the cake a fertile ground for molds. Does anyone have a clue?

Thanks a lot for your time

it looks like it was sitting in standing water on its side

my first guess would be bacteria

it is possible in some cases it was able to fight it off
