    #22312877 - 09/30/15 08:11 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I've been out of jail almost 3 years now and I can't find a job to support myself. My gf and I split the bills but I want to earn at a legit job. Can anyone think of a decent job where my felonies wouldn't matter? Help me Shroomery community, you're my only hope

But if you're in a hurry, and really got to go
If you're in a hurry, might have to find out slow
That it's one thing to try and another to fly
You get there quicker just a step at a time
It's one thing to bark, another to bite
The show ain't over till you pack up at night

Time to specialize in something that you can eventually work for yourself or do contract work.

Learn a trade.  Get a job with a plumbing shop or electrical shop.  After you work for a bit you can find out how to get get in an apprenticeship.  Learn to fix and build everything by yourself and you can become completely self sufficient.  Plumbing or electrical are my suggestion.  I would say to look in to welding, but it sounds like you are having a hard time. I don't see many welding companies hiring on noobies to teach them to weld.  You'd probably have to go to school or call around and ask if you could help for free in exchange for learning how to weld.  Landscaping isn't bad but it's kind of a dead end.  If you go at it on your own and start your own company it can be good, especially if you are somewhere with a lot of new construction. That said, it's hard to start a landscaping company with landscaping wages.  You'd be better off doing something like finding a tree removal service.  You can make a lot more with a chainsaw than you can a lawn mower.  I am a firm believer of working with your hands though regardless.

Carpentry is another cool one but if you want to get paid for it you gotta be fucking good...I'm talking very high end carpentry work.  Otherwise you won't top out very high, especially for basic framing stuff.  I'm not sure how furniture workers do.  Plumbing and electrical are better options for you in my opinion.  I am not a felon and I work with my hands and do pretty well for myself.  The felonies don't sound like they are going away so I'd advise you to adapt.  Remove yourself from the incompetent crowd and become competent.  It's hard work but if you want it you can get it.  You have the possibility to go all the way and start your own company and build it.  Trades are great.

Another route is restaurants if you are in to that sort of thing.  I'd personally rather be homeless and go live in the woods somewhere than work at a restaurant.  I've never had a job in a restaurant and I never will.  I'd rather dig ditches than deal with letting people treat me the way restaurant workers get treated.  Back of house sounds like it could be decent if you like cooking.  I have a felon friend who is a chef and does pretty well.  I'd estimate he makes around 60k a year from what I've heard from him.  The best of the best can do better.  I just think there is too much competition and the restaurant business is all fucked.

The best possible thing you could do is pull out a phone book, go to the yellow pages, and start calling plumbing companies and ask if they need help. You tell them you have no experience and are looking for work.  You tell them you'll show up on time, work your ass off, and have a good attitude...then you actually do that.  There isn't a huge stream of people lining up to be plumbers, because people are fucking stupid.  Going straight out of high school in to a union plumbing apprenticeship is so much smarter than taking on debt to learn something that means nothing to the economy.  The economy gives zero shits what you know, it only cares about what you can produce.  I make way more than some of my friends that got degrees.  Get your hands dirty and work for something and you can come out on top.

Another option my high ass just thought of is going the mechanic route.  Skilled mechanics can do pretty well.

Regardless, you got a felony.  If financial stability is what you seek you need to first make some money.  The way to do that as a felon is by going in to the trades.  Like I said, I'm not a felon but I love my job.  I could still do decent as a felon.  Come up with a game plan.

My plan would go something like this. Get Job>Learn trade>Save money>buy a couple acres of cheap wv land in the country with next to no covenants>Buy a used RV and live in it>Get rainwater collection system and solar panel>grow lots of veggies and raise chickens>Keep doing trade work day in day out and save TONS of money having next to no overhead>build a reasonable affordable house>retire>die

I personally am somewhere in the middle of manifesting a plan like that.

Good luck OP.  Don't make excuses and have a good attitude and never give up.

Thanks Big Bear. One of my best friends ever is a shroomery member and he speaks very highly of you. I currently work for a restaurant with a name so lame I'd be ashamed to type it. The owners abuse the staff and treat us poorly. I have worked there for over a year. I kill myself for these people and they won't give me a raise. Some days I'm scheduled to do two jobs. I could list all the bad things about this job but that's not going to change anything. Maybe I should stop trying to be a good boy and get back to the basics. I feel like no matter what I decide to pursue, I'll need to know my shit in order to offset my felonies.

If you call a bunch of plumbing/electrical/hvac companies out of the yellow pages and say you have no experience but are hungry to work and to learn, you will get a job.  Then the only thing you have to do is show up and work your ass off.  Your pay will go up the more you learn, then you can eventually get another job with your skills and higher pay if they won't give you good enough raises.  Fuck restaurants though. You'll get shit as a grunt too but at least you won't have to deal with the degrading shit near as bad.

The only thing holding you back from that path is you.  All you gotta do is try.  Nobody cares if you have a felony when they are just using you for a strong back.  All they care about is what you can produce.

I couldn't pass a drug test to save my life right now but I could remedy that by abstaining for a few weeks. I feel like most skilled labor tests for drugs. Still, it wouldn't hurt for me to pick up a phone book and start dialing. Thanks Big Bear! Keep repping the Dead!

You'd be surprised.  Lots of residential and stuff you don't have to pass one.  You'll never know until you try.  I've used fake piss for at least a half dozen jobs and never failed one.  Make the move.  Only person that can stop you is you.  If you're truly persistent, you'll find someone to use your back.  I promise.

As one of the earlier posters mentioned you should look into construction especially if you have any construction skills or experience. But look for smaller businesses as almost none of them drug test at least in my area. A lot of people working for small or family owned construction businesses get high.. Many of them drink and get high on the job. You can even drive up to a residential construction site and see if they are hiring. My family does concrete work and we've given people on occasion a day to prove if they can do the work. They get paid at the end of the day and if it seems like it'll work out they get invited back.

You should become a drug dealing, robbing pimp. Make money.
Or get off the internet and get to work. Excuses are a dime a dozen.

Why yes i am.
My point is excuses are a dime a dozen. You want something? Go get it. Period. Felonies don't mean shit. Can't have a gun and can't vote.  Woo hoo. There's nothing saying you can't get rich. Sure, it may present more obstacles, but the opportunity is still there.

All he's saying was that a solution was offered and an excuse was the response for not trying to get a better job.  If you care about making money then Azur is a good person to listen to.  The only solution is rigorous persistence and hard work...if you're a felon at least

Sucks but that's the way it goes

maybe no body.  geokills message was that we have enough depressed suicidal people cruising this board and he doesnt want a member pushing them over the edge.  Which i understand.  People who have attempted suicide usually will end up succeeding at some point.

On the other hand I fully support and understand people wanting to commit suicide.  If you aren't having a good time here no one should feel they have to stay.  I believe in quality of life, not quantity of life.  Why live forever if your fucking miserable, you know?  But im different and I believe in the right to death as strongly as people believe in the right to life.  Probably because I see death every day and view it as an end to suffering.  Whether its physical or mental makes no difference to me.

I'm with you on the suicide thing. I hate when people say suicide is selfish. Bullshit. Wanting someone to live in misery and pain just for you is selfish.

I get what you're saying but I think this is a really shitty thing to say to someone who is suicidal. I've been successful in getting out of a very dark place. I still get sad sometimes but I'm no longer violent and I have friends and things to look forward to. People like me now. After seing a shrink for years and years and watching each session get farther apart and shorter and my pills reduced until the dose was so low it was no longer doing anything anyway I am no longer on any medication and haven't seen a psychiatrist in years. I know it's cliche as hell but there is hope goddammit and never ever tell someone that they're just going to kill themselves anyway. I know you're not trying to be mean or anything but please be mindful of what you say to people who are emotionally vulnerable.  :cuteshit: Don't poo on their pain party ok? Unless they're a slippery masochist of course.

How high were you when you wrote all of this?  Cause i feel high after reading it....

qft

EDIT: Also, I would recommend restaurants (back of the house)

Some of the best chef's I know started as dishwashers and worked their way up to the line and eventually head chef.  The problem though is that it's back-breaking frustrating work and every day it seems like someone calls in sick and you're put on the spot to make up for the loss of labor.

I did it for ten years and the experience has guaranteed me one thing: I will never not be able to find a job.  10 years of restaurants (the first five of which ended up being an apprenticeship where I wound up as head-chef) on my resume and almost any kitchen can find a place for me.

But you'll never make more than 30 grand a year unless your working for some ridiculously large scale kitchen. You can't get in at 'entry level' in those places though. You really have to know your shit and places like that will often have you demonstrate your knife skills / speed before they hire you.

Hey, I was thinking...

Why not learn how to program?

I'm not sure if this is just in California but 60% of the places I apply don't even have you fill out an app.

It is generally just a bunch of software engineering questions.

You'll be hard pressed to find a good IT job with a felony.  most require security clearance, something you definitely won't get as a felon

Most?

Out of almost 10 years in software development I haven't had one job that required a security clearance.

Than again, this is in SF. I'm not sure if things are different elsewhere.

I know there are a lot of government jobs in the field in other states.

And besides, the fact that I'm from SF probably bars me from any security clearance, anyway

I'm a felon that just went a few frustrating months without work.
Restaurant work and diligence are good answers but...
Dont equate to much of a real job opportunity tho.
I've worked in food industry a bunch and hate it that's what has kept me out of a job trying to find another.
So this comes to this, why not try industrial entry level stuff? Plants factories etc hire felons all the time...
Toughest part is the clean pee, and we all know there's qays around that hah! I burn eryday and just landed me a double digit paying job, saying a lot for a felon eh? Especially in the south where mean income is relatively low as is. That's my take and I've had it hard as fuck with this felony bs, I can't hardly get a call back from staffing agencies and I score outrageously on their test, just have to find those employers that could care less or don't mind if it's old , mine is 6yrs old.

Cheers

IME Smaller businesses don't test as much...Landscaping, construction, most part time jobs... as said, you could lie! If they catch you, by the time they do, you might have proven yourself valuable enough to overlook your past, or your back to square one... either way not so bad.

Your mental attitude is 90% of it!  I have watched people get out of prison and get 50K a year jobs, start their own businesses and I have watched some take the "poor me, ima felon, never getta job!!" attitude..My pal was on this kick for YEARS, he's finally is working his way up at a local jeep dealership and doing well....even told me how much it was just attitude now that hes got a $500 paycheck and a gravy job with cool folks.... BTW dealerships are known not to drug test as well......

Depends. I know a lot of people in construction that make decent money. Hell of a lot better then food industry. If you can fork up loans or money to go to some trade school your pretty set. I just wouldn't pick any trade that really cares about ethics because that would be a hard thing to get around with felonies. Air conditioning is huge. Roofing. Framers. Plumbing. Electrical. Demolition.

In the end your going to have to either be able to really fake drug tests are quit until your employed. Everyone I know who has been in these type of jobs were scared shitless to even blaze. I actually had a friend who has a solid ass job as an iron worker and is part of the union and they randomly tested him and he failed from taking 1 fucking hit. He didn't get fired because they saved his ass but he was put on basically job probation.

Opportunities are endless. The most important thing you can do when it comes to making money is do something that you enjoy to earn your cash.

People that enjoy what they do to earn their money have won the game of life.

Also do not rule out going back to school as a possibility. There are federal grants in place that would make it completely feasible for you to be able to attend college and get some type of degree to further you in finding that dream job.

I would suggest going down to your local community college and taking some assessment test that they offer, talk to their financial aid department and who knows, you may wind up getting paid to go to school like I did.

You are definitely on the right track brother and I wish the best to you.

The only advice i can give you is the advice i would take upon myself. If i was out of work and needed a job, i would go to the nearest temp hiring agency fill out the application honestly and take whatever job they had available, then work my way up the ladder from there. Ive done this many times working shitty jobs paying my dues here and there to the agency and what not. It all payd off tho, currently the job i have now is considered hard to get into and has good perks, one of the things that got me in was my work history, what i acquired from each one and just my overall attitude. I might be white but i was in no way privileged, if i didn't wake up every day to go to work i ended up on the streets just like everybody else.

M entire career since before I even graduated highschool has been I.T and I have only had security clearance once.  Tons of places don't really care.  Its more specific to the company then the industry.  If you do security IT work then of course thats going to be an issue.  If you work for a financial institution doing sys admin work, it might be an issue.. but most I.T careers don't really care unless they are companies that contract to other companies (like cabling datacenters, and thats more of an insurance thing) or to the government.

The key is to get to the CAREER level stuff, and away from the JOB stuff.  the JOB level stuff is where you get treated more like a serial number, with drug tests and background checks and gererally easy hire easy fire scenarios.  Once you get to the professional level all that mostly goes out the window.

Anyone on this site should have zero problem passing a drug test.  For one, everyone should be smart enough to research here and elsewhere on fake urine.  Second, if you want a good job you need to prepare to make sacrifices including quitting your pot habit, etc for however long it takes to get that job you really want or need.  If you cant do that then you dont deserve the job anyway.

I'm a felon and I work in  restaurant back of the house. And make Damn good money as grill cook. The trick to making good Money in the food industry while still working under the chef and not being one. Is to find a nice 5star restaurant that's either a dinner only venue or a breakfast only spot. One that's really nice. Lie on your app ask for the wages you want and work your ass off.

QFT. Also. When you do find a job, work your ass off and keep yourself looking presentable.  If your supervisor can say to his supervisor 'john works his ass off and always looks presentable' then you have 90% of the battle won already.

10% is attitude. Stay positive man.

I think I'm working the "presentable/works his ass off" angle pretty well. I have one of the best attendance records at the place I work. I made a connection at an Asian supermarket to sell ginseng and reishi. I'm also working on getting some samples of various edible species for a high end restaurant interested in some locally grown fungus. Things are lookin' up for ol' phishphan.

Have you looked into being an Uber driver? Assuming your felony isn't driving related you should be set. Work your own hours its almost like your own little business. Pay is decent if you put in at least 40 hours a week and youll make a hell of alot more than fast food.

Driving is probably out right now. A couple of my charges were grand theft, felony eluding, reckless driving.

Check your area for gigs as an electrician. My younger brother has ag robbery and assault, same problem with jobs. Electricians use their own licensing system so if you can get apprentice work and keep a job in I think 3 yrs you'll be a journeyman and that'll trump old felonies with a lot of general contractors or smaller electrical companies.

Dude restaurants don't give a shit about drug tests and felonies.  Finding a good chef to apprentice under is the hard part and you'll never make more than minimum hourly (unless you're just awesome like me) but if the front kicks tips back to the kitchen the extra 5 - 10 dollars a day will at least cover your weed and alcohol habit.

Maybe not a cigarette habit if you live in a state with a high tax on it.

Also, believe it or not, small time grocery stores will look the other way at your record. Big corporate ones like safeway may not go for it but the smaller Red Apple and IGA's and Nathan's and other independent grocers won't care.

I had a felony conviction of Intent to Delver and I've done well for myself in food service.

Thanks elastical. I did apply at a small grocery store in my area when I was looking for work. The manager had to have a large stick resting in his colon. I saw his face change when I told him about my convictions. It does sound pretty bad when I say it out loud. I was convicted of (attempted) assault on law enforcement, felony eluding, reckless endangerment, and grand theft (auto).

One of my felony friends has had better luck on the job hunt than I have lately. I have a misdemeanor on my record. According to my felony friend, anda  more reliable source (walmart and home depot human resources personal), a business is more likely to hire someone with a violent felony, than someone with a drug related misdemeanor. Fuck me I guess. I've had 2 temp jobs in the last 2 years that didn't even last a month each. Shits rough.

I'm not saying it's right...

But statistically people with drug charges tend to show up to work under the influence more.

What boss gives a shit if an employee goes home and beats his wife as long as he shows up sober and able to comprehend?

The largest journal of human resource management published an article showing the people who were already employees, and then flunked a drug test, had higher ratings on their last performance evaluation  than the average ratings of employees who didn't flunk a drug test.

I don't think they differentiated for what drugs were screened, and I also suspect that controlling for age would show some effects.

That may be totally true but I would never tell that to my boss. Especially if I hadn't worked with the company for more than a year.

Your performance will always speak louder than words.

OP. Don't forget, wherever you go you will need to learn. Keep your cup empty because you can't fill a vessel that's already full (east asian analogy.)

Being able to drop to your knees and admit you know nothing is sometimes the most powerful ability you can have.

I was just told by an employer I interviewed with that I have a "Red referral" on my background check and thats why I can't get hired anywhere and they can't tell me what its for. WTF is this shit?

Ryder, that sounds unusual. I would like to know what it means as well. I hope that's not happening to me too. I don't have drug charges.
