Learn a trade.  Get a job with a plumbing shop or electrical shop.  After you work for a bit you can find out how to get get in an apprenticeship.  Learn to fix and build everything by yourself and you can become completely self sufficient.  Plumbing or electrical are my suggestion.  I would say to look in to welding, but it sounds like you are having a hard time. I don't see many welding companies hiring on noobies to teach them to weld.  You'd probably have to go to school or call around and ask if you could help for free in exchange for learning how to weld.  Landscaping isn't bad but it's kind of a dead end.  If you go at it on your own and start your own company it can be good, especially if you are somewhere with a lot of new construction. That said, it's hard to start a landscaping company with landscaping wages.  You'd be better off doing something like finding a tree removal service.  You can make a lot more with a chainsaw than you can a lawn mower.  I am a firm believer of working with your hands though regardless.

Carpentry is another cool one but if you want to get paid for it you gotta be fucking good...I'm talking very high end carpentry work.  Otherwise you won't top out very high, especially for basic framing stuff.  I'm not sure how furniture workers do.  Plumbing and electrical are better options for you in my opinion.  I am not a felon and I work with my hands and do pretty well for myself.  The felonies don't sound like they are going away so I'd advise you to adapt.  Remove yourself from the incompetent crowd and become competent.  It's hard work but if you want it you can get it.  You have the possibility to go all the way and start your own company and build it.  Trades are great.

Another route is restaurants if you are in to that sort of thing.  I'd personally rather be homeless and go live in the woods somewhere than work at a restaurant.  I've never had a job in a restaurant and I never will.  I'd rather dig ditches than deal with letting people treat me the way restaurant workers get treated.  Back of house sounds like it could be decent if you like cooking.  I have a felon friend who is a chef and does pretty well.  I'd estimate he makes around 60k a year from what I've heard from him.  The best of the best can do better.  I just think there is too much competition and the restaurant business is all fucked.

The best possible thing you could do is pull out a phone book, go to the yellow pages, and start calling plumbing companies and ask if they need help. You tell them you have no experience and are looking for work.  You tell them you'll show up on time, work your ass off, and have a good attitude...then you actually do that.  There isn't a huge stream of people lining up to be plumbers, because people are fucking stupid.  Going straight out of high school in to a union plumbing apprenticeship is so much smarter than taking on debt to learn something that means nothing to the economy.  The economy gives zero shits what you know, it only cares about what you can produce.  I make way more than some of my friends that got degrees.  Get your hands dirty and work for something and you can come out on top.

Another option my high ass just thought of is going the mechanic route.  Skilled mechanics can do pretty well.

Regardless, you got a felony.  If financial stability is what you seek you need to first make some money.  The way to do that as a felon is by going in to the trades.  Like I said, I'm not a felon but I love my job.  I could still do decent as a felon.  Come up with a game plan.

My plan would go something like this. Get Job>Learn trade>Save money>buy a couple acres of cheap wv land in the country with next to no covenants>Buy a used RV and live in it>Get rainwater collection system and solar panel>grow lots of veggies and raise chickens>Keep doing trade work day in day out and save TONS of money having next to no overhead>build a reasonable affordable house>retire>die

I personally am somewhere in the middle of manifesting a plan like that.

Good luck OP.  Don't make excuses and have a good attitude and never give up.

How high were you when you wrote all of this?  Cause i feel high after reading it....

Sounds about right but if your gonna be saving all that money for all the time say fuk it and move to a south american country where the dollar goes a long way , early retire margaritas and senoritas

All he's saying was that a solution was offered and an excuse was the response for not trying to get a better job.  If you care about making money then Azur is a good person to listen to.  The only solution is rigorous persistence and hard work...if you're a felon at least

Sucks but that's the way it goes

i mean, he's not looking to do the work for philanthropical reasons

that in itself is bs

idk what felonies consists of but on this particular site it might make sense to give some wiggle room

maybe no body.  geokills message was that we have enough depressed suicidal people cruising this board and he doesnt want a member pushing them over the edge.  Which i understand.  People who have attempted suicide usually will end up succeeding at some point.

On the other hand I fully support and understand people wanting to commit suicide.  If you aren't having a good time here no one should feel they have to stay.  I believe in quality of life, not quantity of life.  Why live forever if your fucking miserable, you know?  But im different and I believe in the right to death as strongly as people believe in the right to life.  Probably because I see death every day and view it as an end to suffering.  Whether its physical or mental makes no difference to me.

I'm with you on the suicide thing. I hate when people say suicide is selfish. Bullshit. Wanting someone to live in misery and pain just for you is selfish.

I get what you're saying but I think this is a really shitty thing to say to someone who is suicidal. I've been successful in getting out of a very dark place. I still get sad sometimes but I'm no longer violent and I have friends and things to look forward to. People like me now. After seing a shrink for years and years and watching each session get farther apart and shorter and my pills reduced until the dose was so low it was no longer doing anything anyway I am no longer on any medication and haven't seen a psychiatrist in years. I know it's cliche as hell but there is hope goddammit and never ever tell someone that they're just going to kill themselves anyway. I know you're not trying to be mean or anything but please be mindful of what you say to people who are emotionally vulnerable.  :cuteshit: Don't poo on their pain party ok? Unless they're a slippery masochist of course.

EDIT: Also, I would recommend restaurants (back of the house)

Some of the best chef's I know started as dishwashers and worked their way up to the line and eventually head chef.  The problem though is that it's back-breaking frustrating work and every day it seems like someone calls in sick and you're put on the spot to make up for the loss of labor.

I did it for ten years and the experience has guaranteed me one thing: I will never not be able to find a job.  10 years of restaurants (the first five of which ended up being an apprenticeship where I wound up as head-chef) on my resume and almost any kitchen can find a place for me.

But you'll never make more than 30 grand a year unless your working for some ridiculously large scale kitchen. You can't get in at 'entry level' in those places though. You really have to know your shit and places like that will often have you demonstrate your knife skills / speed before they hire you.

Hey, I was thinking...

Why not learn how to program?

I'm not sure if this is just in California but 60% of the places I apply don't even have you fill out an app.

It is generally just a bunch of software engineering questions.

You'll be hard pressed to find a good IT job with a felony.  most require security clearance, something you definitely won't get as a felon

Most?

Out of almost 10 years in software development I haven't had one job that required a security clearance.

Than again, this is in SF. I'm not sure if things are different elsewhere.

I know there are a lot of government jobs in the field in other states.

And besides, the fact that I'm from SF probably bars me from any security clearance, anyway

I'm a felon that just went a few frustrating months without work.
Restaurant work and diligence are good answers but...
Dont equate to much of a real job opportunity tho.
I've worked in food industry a bunch and hate it that's what has kept me out of a job trying to find another.
So this comes to this, why not try industrial entry level stuff? Plants factories etc hire felons all the time...
Toughest part is the clean pee, and we all know there's qays around that hah! I burn eryday and just landed me a double digit paying job, saying a lot for a felon eh? Especially in the south where mean income is relatively low as is. That's my take and I've had it hard as fuck with this felony bs, I can't hardly get a call back from staffing agencies and I score outrageously on their test, just have to find those employers that could care less or don't mind if it's old , mine is 6yrs old.

Cheers

IME Smaller businesses don't test as much...Landscaping, construction, most part time jobs... as said, you could lie! If they catch you, by the time they do, you might have proven yourself valuable enough to overlook your past, or your back to square one... either way not so bad.

Your mental attitude is 90% of it!  I have watched people get out of prison and get 50K a year jobs, start their own businesses and I have watched some take the "poor me, ima felon, never getta job!!" attitude..My pal was on this kick for YEARS, he's finally is working his way up at a local jeep dealership and doing well....even told me how much it was just attitude now that hes got a $500 paycheck and a gravy job with cool folks.... BTW dealerships are known not to drug test as well......
