Habitat: Grass next to mulch
Gills: pores. yellow. bruising blue/green
Stem: 1 3/4" (45mm), yellow, sturdy. bruising blue/green. has red at the base where attached. remnants of moss came with it when i pulled it up.
Cap: they still appear young, ~1.25" (30mm) in diameter.
Spore print color: no spore print. i figured the rest would be good. can get one if needed, but they may not be sporulating yet (maybe?)
Bruising: pores and stem bruise a bluish/green hue in about 30 seconds.
Other information: the mushroom itself is pretty strong. not sure how to describe the taste or smell. neither made me cringe, though.

Thank you! i really want to find some edible boletes and if my yard is a spot for that then i'd be thrilled!

i almost want to say its the second picture on this site: http://scmycoflora.org/genera/xerocomellus/xerocomellus-species.php
xerocomellus truncatus seems to fit the bill pretty closely with the exception that the ones i found have flatter caps and less red, which might be an age factor. some sources put me at the same species but under boletus - does this matter? is it synonymous?
the difference in the ones i've found and your suggestion is the stem towards the pores (and maybe they're young, still) - your suggestion has a reticulate stem closer to the pores.
god damn this is so hard for me!

what would the difference be on a xerocomellus and a boletus? I read that xerocomellus is 'edible and good' - is it safe to assume for any other mushroom of a family with the same name?
thank you

Everything in Xerocomellus is edible and good.
Everything in Boletus is edible and good, but that is only because 99% of the species in that genus were just kicked out, leaving only the porcini group in Boletus sensu stricto. Boletus sensu lato still has lots of toxic boletes.
