Types of Cows and Mushroom Growth
    #22309714 - 09/29/15 05:09 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Do the types of cows generally make a difference with how mushrooms would grow from their shit? Very new to this whole hunting and identification thing so if this is a dumb or easily answered question, please tell me!

well, not so much the cow, as it is the type of mushroom one is searching for.  Cow Manure is just the type of substrate that certain types of mushrooms thrive in...and is not the only substrate that it will grow in.  So i guess what I am asking is, what are you looking for? Edibles? Actives? medicinals?

Given your question I am assuming that you are referring to Psilocybe Cubensis, and then your location would matter also.  I do believe that Psilocybe Cubensis prefer manure from all cow species, and some horse manures.  Also beware that other species of mushrooms like these conditions as well...Including but not limited to:

Bolbitius vitellinus[2]
Conocybe pubescens[2]
Conocybe rickenii[7]
Coprinellus niveus[7]
Coprinopsis acuminata
Coprinopsis cinerea
Coprinopsis narcotica [7]
Coprinopsis patouillardii[7]
Coprinopsis radiata[6]
Crucibulum laeve[9]
Cyathus stercoreus[9]
Deconica coprophila[10]
Deconica merdaria[10]
Panaeolus papilionaceus[6]
Panaeolus semiovatus[6]
Protostropharia[10] (all species)
!!Psilocybe cubensis!!

So, with that being said, make sure you are properly Identifing all species you find correctly.

Welcome to the Shroomery, and happy hunting. Hope this helps

just get out there and start hitting some pastures homie, no need to worry about whats coming out of the cows ass, just make sure you can identify the mushrooms you're searching for.

I read that the reason P.C. thrives in cow fields is due to the digestive tract of cattle. As the cow grazes it ingest spores, which go through it's multiple stomachs. Cows do not have acidic stomach lining that would normally kill the spores so they are ingested and the dispersed throughout the field. This makes the ground perfect for the growth of the mushrooms.

I've only seen this claim on one site - not shroomery- so it may be incorrect.

Thanks for the replies. I mainly asked because somebody on here told me that a dairy cow's shit cannot be host to psilocybe cubensis mushrooms, and it didn't make much sense.
