i just cooked up some wbs

well i just cooked and pc'd 32 pint of white millet. i boiled it for 30mins strained and loaded into pint jars. well after going through the pc they expanded so there not shakeable. getting the time to pc is a pain in the ass and i really don't want to do it again. is it necessary to shake wbs or can i just grow them like a brf cake?i have some gc spores on the way, 40cc worth, will they be safe in this damn cold, i heard it was 3degrees today?

If you soak WBS, and shake after PC'ing, clumping won't be a problem. It isn't neccessary to shake WBS but it certainly speeds up the colonization process.
As for spores being delivered in the mail, I've had some delivered in a blizzard and they worked great. If anything I would imagine the cold would preserve them.
in the future, you should consider soaking WBS, shake after PC'ing. If you can't shake the substrate it will colonize slower.

What is wrong with the Shroomery this week. There are many noobs giving partially correct, or completely wrong answers to questions.

Satori 1, I am looking at you.

To answer the question in this thread. Chuck em' and start again. The WBS expanded when PC'ed. This happens every time. To avoid it in the future, only fill the jars up 2/3 of the way. This will allow expansion room.

The reason I say start over is cause if you can't shake them, your defeating the purpose of using WBS in the first place. You can shake them and distribute the mycelium. They CAN be colonated without shaking, but at your experience level, your best bet is to start again. Millet is cheap.

Also you are planning on going from straight syringe to WBS? I would reccommend against that too. It's going to take along time to get germination going. If you combine that with the over-expanded, unshakeable, "clumpy" grain, your going to be dissappointed.

i strained for about a half hor after boiling the seedand dind't add water when i loaded the jars, the seed didn't expand too much i just filled the jars up to much. i have a few jars of gt colonizing now, i'll try a grain to grain transfer once there colonized, i'll just remove some of the extra grain so the jars are shakable. i'll have to put together a golve box or is this not nessecary?

I know re-PC'ing 30 jars is nobodys idea of a good time, but everything else is going to be one of 3 things.

1) more frustrating

2) more time consuming

3) more expensive

You can do whatever you'd like, but I reccomend just starting anew.

well the millet is no prob, i bought a 50lb bag of it, i have more jars, i'll try a grain to grain with what i have now and start some more fresh ones i still have a bit before my syringes come any way. thx

Does any one see any problems with me doing a grain to grain transfer and removing some of the excess grain from my over stuffed pc'd jars so the jars are shakable? I figure I can make a big glove box and do like half of the jars at a time. They should colonize faster like that right? i have a small Rubbermaid container i was thinking of putting in the extra wbs and using some of my gt mycelium to colonize that too would it work?. Also it seems as though I'm gonna have a lot of jars and only one incubator, can I stack the jars in there or is that a no no  ? Its a big Rubbermaid tub, like 45 gallons. I have another 45g tub with a 200 watt heater for my incubating chamber to sit in. I still gotta pick up a water pump to circulate the heated water better since i wanna stuff the incubator completely full. Could I find something like that at home depot? I'm gonna pick up a few more 45g Rubbermaid tubs to make a fruiting chamber. What I was thinking of doing is setting racks in it so I can put my trays with the casings in them, I figure I can fit quite a few in like that. i plan to use outdoor Christmas lights to give my children light. I have and air pump to circulate the air inside of the tub. I was wondering if its worth getting a filter for it since I have to open it to check on my babies? You open up the doors for contams. I would only do half of the jars g2g.

Yes, if done carefully.

You can stack but I would rotate the jars.

HD has the water pumps in the garden section by the fountain/pond supplies

I don't think you will have enough room for growth with the perlite...depending on how big your fruits are.

If you are planning on putting the lights inside the container then you may have a problem with heat.

You can never be to clean


Is this your first grow? If so, the best advice I can give you is to not put all you jars in one basket  :grin:

SHIT... dude is inoculating wbs tonight and did the usual bump on the jar with the heal of his hand and the jar cracked. I guess the iron palm kung-fu is paying off :grin: Seriously, that could have been a few stitches if it broke apart completely. Anybody ever do that?

i assume you did at least a few pf jars in the begining and thats why you are now doing wbs jars. back to the point - even if your wbs jars are too full you still have a chance. the reason for only filling the jars 2/3 or 3/4 full is so you can shake it which speeds colonization. if you can't shake your jars they may begin to colonize but won't colonize the entire substrate before contams set in. don't use all your cc's on these jars, just do a few and see what happens. next time soak your wbs before you load your jars and pc - check out the faq's, seriously- there is a lot of good shit in there and will save you a lot trouble. - good luck  :smile:

I think that most of us have cracked jars at some time or other . That is why most of us use catalogs , phone books or rubber matts . Not only that but after "shaking" a number of jars (over 2 dozen ) your hand tends to get very sore from the smacking .

That is the third one dude has cracked like that out of several hundred jars...not to bad of an average. I guess dude gets pumped about nocin' up his jars and doesn't think about the soreness later  :grin:

well i just got my spores and they're quite clumpy, ive been shaking for a while one syringe was totally frozen. i hope they're still good. tomorrow i'm gonna build a big glove box for the grain to grain transfer
