That's the first guide I stumbled across before finding this site. I built the ultrasonic with the 2L pop bottles et al. It was an incredibly huge pain in the ass. I wish I could fart in your dinner for recommending it.

Sure, if someone follows my advice or my tek of choice and fails, chances are it wasn't the advice or the tek.....

I also do not advise to make fruiting chambers that will perform inadequately when compared to what everyone else does on the forum these days....it's 2015, not 2003.

Just like the original iphone from 07 is basically obsolete, so are some cultivation teks and beliefs of that time.

Evolution

The "PF Tek" was even terrible back then :V

We tried it like... once, and then realized an autoclavable bag held 10x as much.

You can simply use brown or parboiled rice (with 3/4 of the water) which is cheaper and easier.

Cakes in terrariums get fewer results than casing in plastic tubs.

You can inject sterile water into a bag, mix and draw it out and get sterile inoculum.*

You can mix the mycelium up in a bag when it is ~10-15% colonized to speed things up 3-fold.

These are P. cubensis and some of the easiest mushrooms to grow and fruit. I'm not sure what "new millennium methods" brought to the table but I got good flushes in a plastic container covered in plastic or saran wrap (I was not about to set up some intricate air flow and filtration system in 20 or 30 large plastic containers). Even when I mistakenly left some bags in the temperature-controlled inoculation chamber (a small closet in my room with a door as the temperature control) they STILL fruited, albeit with much fewer mushrooms than a casing would bring.

I would just like to know what scientific advances I've missed out on :V

* keep in mind these were the bags with the self-healing inoculation site

It's more like logical advances that blow that tek out the water.... like the understanding on how gravity effects mushroom growth, how tons of FAE will get you low co2 levels, high RH, and healthier fruits if you find a way to make it passive and constant, instead of telling everyone to just focus on keeping the chamber at 90% RH or above which will teach them a lot less about how this stuff works.

Or how NOT keeping the jars in a dark place to colonize is just fine, or how dunking the cakes and rolling them in verm(re-hydrating and casing them) gives better results than not....Do I have to go on?

That tek says a temp drop and light is required for cubes to pin.....or my favorite part....

""""If the mushrooms have mycelium growing on the caps, it is an indication that your humidity is too low in the terrarium. In this case, you have just enough humidity to allow the cakes to fruit, but you are right on the edge of failure. """"

My god, what were they smoking back then? All of this info is harmful to noobs, and none of it should ever be recommended by a TC on these forums......we're better than that.

Soooo...maybe a function that allows certain members to mark old crap out dated or have it moved to an archive to keep for references or something...idk how this shit works but this outdated info thing combined with all the "use the search function" (when folks don't use the search filters, because a lot dont) comments really makes for a bunch of repetitive, unnecessary posts... I'm high, I don't really care all that much...just a thought

Ha...that's totally what the filter on the search's function is for isn't it? My bad

In all fairness, I think people have historically stuck to the PF tek as a recommendation for newbs because it was thought to be easier. Like I said in one of those posts, I never did find it to be easier but certainly less effective, so I'm not one to advocate it. I never saw how jars are easier than bags or how building a terrarium that needs to maintain a high rH in the ass-cold winters of Massachusetts was easier than casing it.

Then again, peat and lime was considered an "advanced technique."

Most of what I learned was from The Mushroom Cultivator or other books, along with PubMed.

This is what I mean by strict. If that person posted that pic today people would tell him he needs more fresh air exchange (fae)

That's just wrong. There is more than one variable involved in getting a good flush.

Also, they are growing it *inside the bag* which is probably their first issue, not air exchange.

Those bags generally have a .2um filter-patch on them for that very reason.

Oh, I also got better flushes than the picture you posted =P

I just don't carry such a myopic view.

Having *too good* a pinset results in tiny midget mushrooms.

It is all a balance.

Also, there is a filter patch

Filter patches are meant to restrict airflow down to just GE during colonization, not provide any type of FAE for fruiting......

The filter was pretty large for the size of the bags... I can't imagine any kind of gas not being able to diffuse through it. That said, I don't advocate *fruiting* them in the bag anyway. They would have gotten a better flush and bigger mushrooms casing it.

I have gotten flushes of probably 500 in a smallish plastic container, to the point it was a pain in the rear to pick all of them. They were tiny midget mushrooms and my roommate had a few but they were HUGE. After that I just didn't case them as evenly; the problem was the amount of substrate vs. nutrients all of those mushies would need as they grow up. A lot of mushrooms is not always the best goal. It should be saturated, however.

That said, smaller mushrooms are thought to be more potent.

edit: also, restrict airflow?

what on earth, why would anyone do that

Beats me why people restrict airflow on fruiting. That's why I was shocked people weren't telling the dude to get more fae, because his shit needed it. Also ime, if you give them what they need, big pinsets turn into:

I'll show you what bods shit turns into. He only posted that a few hours ago

k, i'm missing something here

what is the difference? air is a gas

any gas should be able to move through a .2um filter so the only difference is dust particles, etc.

 straw is considered a bulk substrate, not a casing material....and I never said anything about straw....

You said adding a casing layer would yield more, then I said "and spawning to bulk would yield even more"so what's the issue?

Why would we use restrictive filters for fruiting, when fruiting requires butt loads of fresh air?

We use these filters specifically because of their ability to block most fresh air, so whatever substrate we have in out jars/bags stays sterile.

Fruiting is not a sterile process, it is done in open air, with tons of currents, and millions of mold spores.

If you fruit in the same bag as you colonized in, without adding holes for adequate FAE, you get shrooms that look like this:

[url=https://files.shroomery.org/files/111702-2/94891-P1010085.jpg]

These fruits are begging for more FAE, because there is no FAE in that bag....there is only a single hole covered in filter material.....
