Drying shrooms with desiccant
#22308307 - 09/29/15 01:26 PM (8 years, 4 months ago) |

Hey there
I don't have a fan to start off the drying process, but I have a bunch of desiccant though.
How long would it take for the desiccant to dry out the mushrooms without using a fan?
Thanks in advance

Probably a couple of days
Usually people will use an oven when they have no other means of drying, but a fan is a good idea when oven drying. You should at least get a fan.

If you plan on growin for a while and don't want your hard earned mushies to lose potency by improperly drying them, then you need to invest in a basic food dehydrator. There is no better, or easier way. Mushies will come out cracker dry in 12 hours or less at the highest heat setting.

the more dry the shrooms get the also become like a descant themselves. they have an affinity for moisture in the air, when cracker dry their affinity for moisture in the air is very high and they will readily become not cracker dry again. this and also the fact that desiccant just can't pull that much moisture that fast means trying to get shrooms from harvested to cracker dry with just descant itself is pretty bad idea.
you constantly would have to change out the descant for new freshly dried descant. you overwhelm the descant with moisture really fast using fresh shrooms. descant is more for keeping things dry once they're dry. they do make descant chambers which are air tight and are for drying samples but they are very small samples which less original moisture content than shrooms have

Awhile. Desiccant is meant for final drying. Get yourself a fan. At ~90% an OZ of dried mushies has over half a pound of water in them, which is quite a lot for your desiccant to absorb.

I like the way you put this. They really do become a sponge for moisture when they're completely dry, because the level of dryness is unnatural given the environment.

Using desiccant alone, they will rot before they dry out. I speak from experience.

Not only that. Fresh mushrooms have an active metabolism. If you put them in a sealed container like that they consume the oxygen leaving them vulnerable to anaerobic bacteria. Mushrooms that have been air dried first are pretty much dormant so that won't happen.

Cant have a thread about drying mushrooms without someone telling you to buy a dehydrator!

I've never had this happen before.
Also, dealers keep shrooms in bags for a long time and never had problems.
We heat-sealed them, but that was probably taking it overboard.

Maybe *that* was your problem. You can dry desiccant by putting it in the oven and dumping the excess water out. I have even used the microwave, though I have never seen anyone do that before so take it with a grain of salt (I think I was using calcium chloride). If you try using Damp-Rid or another commercial drying agent that isn't laboratory-grade anhydrous material, you should dry it off in the oven first. This will dry them out a lot faster with no need for heat. It should be in an air-tight container with plenty of calcium chloride (Damp-Rid) and a plastic screen or something suspended above the desiccant to put the mushrooms on so they aren't touching the calcium chloride.
According to a journal article I read today, the highest potency is obtained by freeze-drying.

Curious why freeze drying is better when the melting point is so high? It seems to be todays consensus that you want to dry them quickly to prevent oxidation, and then store them in an airtight container with a desiccant to retain potency, and not oxidize during storage

lol, nobody said the alkaloid were going to *melt*
well, not that i know of, that would be silly
and yeah, people have been worried about oxidation for a long time
it should be mostly psilocybin though; isn't de-phosphorylation reduction? =P
if there is any potency loss it is probably through enzymatic degradation
the journal didn't attempt to give a reason for it and it wasn't the main topic anyway
edit: no, it's not. i had the charge wrong, thinking about it. (PO43-)

Shrooms in regular baggies only stay cracker dry a few weeks. Ziploc or glad bags zipper or not.
I also never had a *problem* I've never been dumb enough to try drying with only descant. Fresh descant comes from the oven or if you're an idiot and don't know about drying descant you would actually use new stuff rather than "renewed"

I've said it before and I'll say it again, my second best purchase for this endeavor was a cheap dehydrator, only beaten out by the AA pressure cooker.
