About to PC some filter patch bags ...
    #2230738 - 01/09/04 09:50 AM (20 years, 2 months ago)

I have some filter patch bags with rye grain and distilled water (1000 mL rye to 880mL of water (should be weight porportional)) and I let them soak overnight as instructed here . There is some water that has not been absorbed (I would guess around 100 or so mL) and I was wondering if that would be absorbed when cooked or if I should pour it off now. I have had some problems with too wet of a substrate and was hoping that this time I could do it right.

How do you soak 1000 mL of grain in 880 mL of water? The water obvoiusly won't cover the grain, so you're not soaking it. You're getting the two recipes confuzed, I think -- if you want to do proportions you just P.C. it, OR you can soak it overnight in water -- use more than enough water to cover it. I only do the latter, so someone else should help you out, but I would probably leave the extra water in -- just a guess.

it actually does cover the grain and I guess the extra water isnt too much for it to be absorbed while cooked

The whole time? I'm trying to picture this -- the grain is absorbing 780 out of 880 mL of water, and there's 100mL left, and it's still covering it? Usually I use like 2x or 3x the amount of the grain in water, just to be sure....

I can't picture that soaking the grain, though.

displacement, grain takes up space and displaces the water.

I am just going to cook it and see what happens with the two that are in there (should be done in a couple hours).

What would be effected if the I sealed the top of the filter patch bags (as seen here (again) ) before they went into the pressure cooker. I would think this would minimize risk to contamination, but what do I know.
