Do cacti go dormant due to lower temperatures or shorter days?

some do, others don't for example it's a good idea to let lophophoras go dormant, but cacti as fast growig columnars or hylocereus don't need dormancy. (i really depends on your zone, i live in sicily so my columnars stay out all the year due warmer temps) anyhow, you will notice that they do get thinner circumference due slight etiolation/slower growht (as fact, you can count the number of growing seasons on big cacti as cereus just looking at the stem)
one of the best advice i can give you is to not give water to your cactus while there's not enought sun. Even with warmer temperatures, they do tend to dislike this water/no sun combination, and they will etiolate badly.
returning to small globose slow growing ones, dormancy is reccomanded. I usually do put my lophs in a bright place with no direct sun, and no water for 6 months

I also live in a frost free environment, and my all cacti live outside all year. Most of mine are Mexican desert cacti, and in their habitat winter is the dry season. I try to emulate that, and put them in a cold frame December to February, keeping them dry, but still giving as much light as possible. But they never really go totally dormant - growth slows, and last summer´s growth ripens. But the Lophophoras will still sometimes flower in January !! In March, as things are starting to warm up, they get a good watering and another season starts.

Seems like the question has been pretty much answered, but I wanted to throw my 2 cents in as well. From what I've noticed, it's more temp related than light. I'm sure shortening daylight during the fall/winter influences them some, but I see some people saying they try to put their cacti in a dark basement or closet or garage... Not necessary. I'm in zone 8 and when the threat of frost starts coming around, I just move mine into my glassed-in porch that still gets the same amount of sun they get outside. They don't get etiolated by continuing to grow or anything that way, so I know they are going completely dormant/ or at least if they are still growing very slightly, there is still enough light to keep em the same thickness.

From what I've noticed it really does have more to do with the Temp but I'm planning a lil test this season just for shits and giggles.

If its warm and I put them in darkness I get white flesh, from the lack of light. I had a couple cuttings sitting in a cupboard for a few weeks that I forgot, and there is a solid inch or so of translucentish white at the tips, since it was warm they wanted to grow. If it was colder here I do not think I would have gotten that.
