NW Indiana Mushrooms
    #22305316 - 09/28/15 09:23 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Hello.....any help in identifying would be appreciated...

...these are growing in my lawn about 25 feet from a 75+ year old White Pine. The pine has surface roots all over the yard with various mushrooms growing annually. This is the first year I've seen this type and am curious as to their ID. The larger caps are about 4" in diameter with 1/2" diameter stems. No spore print has been taken.

I am new to identifying mushrooms but I think, best guess, that they are some type of Bolete?

Thank you for your experience and time.

Possibly a Xerocomus species.

Thank you.....we all have to start somewhere and this looks like a good place to.

You're kind.

What would be the best way to narrow down it's species?

I don't think Xerocomus species have glandular dots like that, I could be wrong though.

Under Eastern White Pine find chanterelles, painted suillus, chicken fat mushrooms, Boletus pinicola/pinophilus (a type of king bolete) and a few others.

Google:

B735: Ectomycorrhizae of Maine 1: A Listing of
Boletaceae with the Associated Hosts

A good read for what grows under what and what not. LoL, had to use "what" one more time.

Thank you for your "replies"...Suillus americanus a.k.a. "chicken fat mushroom", after doing a little more research, seems to be the best fit.

One more question...what are/causes the reddish brown fibers and scales to form on the cap? Image is of a young Suillus americanus cap.

Thanks again.....appreciated!

I've noticed that conditions are a huge influence on growth and color. High heat after heavy rain, maturing under cover and lots of other factors. This ID was hard for me because of the red scaly look. But sometimes I've found it's best to try to ID but it's best to repeat over and over. Looking for very young specimens all the way up to the old and dying mature ones. Plus, learning the area seems to be key. In a ½ sq mile there are several places that have unique species. That can also help narrow the ID. But all in all it takes time. Or you could just get a print and get DNA testing done.

Yes...seems like a lot of 'factors' play a part in the identification process along with variations among species...thanks for your reply.
