    #22304920 - 09/28/15 08:11 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Found these in 1 bunch in a lawn in PA. There must be 50 packed together very dense. Any ideas? Edible? Active? Thanks in advance!

Maybe Gymnopilus junonius, what color are the spore prints? Do they stain green at all?

Still doing a print. Started 30 mins ago and barley visible but maybe brown? I would say staining is tan to brown.

Are you clapping because I found something good? Let's say this was an active bunch of shrooms, how do you get rid of all the bugs?

I'm still confused, what did I find? I was driving down the road and saw them. Knocked on the door and they said "please take them, I hate seeing those things". If I have something good I'll be a nice guy and clear her whole yard! They resemble some pics of gymnopilus luteus, yellow tops I think they called them.

They look the same and features sound alike. Is there a way I can know for sure (or close to it)? Can I put this bunch into a humid climate and get them to finish growing? Should I check the yard where I found them again or is it one and done? Sorry for the questions, first possible active find. Thanks for helping me ID these guysß

I recommend identifying mushrooms BOTH with the help of others and by using "identification keys." Sometimes you have to spend an hour or two comparing a species description with what you've collected. You should feel right about the ID 100% or continue studying it until you do.

Once mushrooms are harvested, they can be printed for re-generation, or cloned. You'll want to read about mushroom growing. Some species can have their stipe-basal mycelium added to wood chips for re-generation. Usually mycologists rely and cloning or spore transfer to antiobiotic malt extract agar for trustworthy prosperity.

Definitely. You could see another harvest this year or in future years. But maybe not!

I'd smash a lil one and stick it in the fridge see if it turns green or blue.

its best to pick a smaller one, one of the pins, take with it a little bit of that mycelium base, place them fully exposed in the fridge for about 6-8 hours, then look at them closely, especially around the edge of the cap, and at the base of the stem..you will see a bluish/green tent if they are active.  Im 100% sure those are gymnopilus junonius (spectabilis) East Coast? if they are then chances are theyr active.
(Notice the bluing around the edge of the cap)(And at the top, and bottom of the stem)
Note for Future:  When harvesting gymnopilus species try to NOT damage the mycelium too much, like you did above (with that chunk of mycelium) Gymnopilus mycelium in my experience is very sensitive, and harvesting gently will improve your chances of more flushes, and future success.

Also, compare your pictures to this one..this is Gymnopilus Junonius I found last year, almost identical to yours.  Mine are always VERY VERY active...and I compare their potency to about 80-90% of most Cubensis species, contrary to what most people say.
(Notice this clump, these are younger than yours, but I also messed up and harvested the entire cluster, and destroyed future fruits unknowingly! Dont make the same mistake!!)

Good Job!

Thanks for your help. Here is about 10 mins in the fridge. Definitely turning green! Wife saw a little white worm in the bag and screamed. No more shrooms in the fridge for me. Does fast bluing equate to higher potency? Are these no good because of the worms (I say worms cause I don't want to think I had a bag of maggots in my fridge)? There is a small forest 10 feet from where they were, worth scouting? Sorry for all the questions.

Bruising is a debatable way of determining potency. Definitely active though!

Bugs are in every mushroom the faster you dry em the faster they die. Or boil em to death. Just extra protein. Lay em out to dry most the bugs will jump or crawl out.

I would scout everywhere near by. Look for stumps logs and chip piles.

Congrats!

Yes its worth scouting! In fact its worth looking in every single crack and corner.

You lucky motherfucker I envy you so much, Gyms are my favorite species.
If I had some right here id feast upon their flesh.

Ive eatin them with the worms and it didnt harm me or my friends. However if your a pussy about it make a tea or dry them to a crisp in a food dehydrator
