Problem
    #2230491 - 01/09/04 08:42 AM (13 years, 11 days ago)

I just mixed my first PF jar 1/2 cup verm, 1/4 BRF, 1/4 water....The problem is I only used about half of it to fill the jar....Is this normal??

Yes, because it tends to "puff" up and the air spaces are what you want. If it's compacted, it won't colonise. So always fill 'em loose.

Though I think this "half" caper is a tad exaggerated. I found it was approx. 25%. So make up enough in measure to 4 jars/glasses and it clocks out to 5 jars/glasses, given too the room needed for the dry-vermiculite anti-contaminant barrier (approx. 10mm to 15mm).

You want it about as wet as bread dough, in other words not wet.

I haven't found the ratio 1 part (BRF or ground millet) to 2 parts vermiculite and 1 part water to fail.

The ratio you've used is exactly that so I'd say you'll be fine.
