P. cubensis cultivation
    #22304174 - 09/28/15 05:38 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

This is my first attempt at magic mushroom cultivation. I just cultivated some oysters which was my first attempt at cultivation period.

I have 7 half pint BRF jars of P. cubensis  a strain spores, many over 50% colonized.

This is my terrarium, don't worry, it is no longer on the floor:

I had a thread going for my oysters and received a lot of help along the way, so I thought I would get a thread going for these also.

(edit) don't worry, I am not going to place the cakes directly in the perlite like shown above, those were a previous oyster cultivation attempt, I just wanted to show what kind of terrarium that I am using.

If I get an average yield from my 7 BRF cakes, how many grams roughly will I get? I know it can be hard to judge, but just a rough estimate.

You should have used 1/2 pint WIDE MOUTH jars. Complete colonization can be a pain in the ass with the jars you used.
But everything else looks good. Remember, your cakes will like actual drops of water resting on top of them when they are in the fruiting chamber.

When misting should I avoid spraying the cakes directly or does that matter?

Next time I'll use the type of jar that you suggested.

Mist them directly, you don't want to mist your walls, only the cakes. Mist them until they glisten with a light layer of moisture then fan. Sometimes you wont even have to mist, only fan, just depends on how the cakes are looking. With more experience you'll notice how they're supposed to be looking when they need to be misted.

Cool, thanks for the info. Once 100% colonized, would you let them sit for a week before birthing like I have seen said in some teks?

Yes, for BRF cakes you want to allow a week of consolidation after 100% colonization.

Yeah. Give them a solid week from when it appears that they are fully colonized before you open them.

Will do. The myceilium seems to be spreading really quick at this point. I think they will be 100% colonized within a few days. After that as stated, I will give them a week before birthing.

Do you recommend the dunk and roll method? That is my current plan.

While this is undoubtedly true and have read for 3 years about the differences in the jars. I have never had a problem using the regular ones. I don't see why they work well for me but not so many other people. Shit, I have even used the tall full pint regular mouth jars with same results....no problems. Must be cause once inoculated I don't handle much so they don't compact as bad....

I've read all the arguments regarding the different style half pint jars, and yea I agree the half pint wide mouth jars work better.

But I've never had any problems with the tall half pints. In most parts, short of ordering online they are becoming very hard to find

I had no issues using pint jars my first time. I do prefer half pints as well.

I have one fruiting in the jar.

Is this normal? The jar is only 70% colonized. What should I do? Should I wait for 100% colonization before birthing. Will that shroom rot?

If its not fully colonized its probably pinning early because its contaminated. Maybe just some bacteria.

Wait till its finished colonizing but maybe skip the consolidation period, dunk roll and fruit.

Un colonized grain needs to be kept sterile. If you birth it now it will contaminate for sure

I just realized that there is some space between the grain and the side of the jar. It must have clumped up there and left an air pocket.
