I want to go magic mushroom hunting this season in Australia. I have done some picking in the past and have a little bit of experience but I want to be responsible and make sure I am certain of the species I am going to eat. We get two main species of magic mushrooms where I live in Byron Bay (gold tops and meanies). I want a book that can provide species of look a likes. 'Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World' sounds like a good book, but 'Mushrooms Demystified' sounds more extensive also covering mushrooms that are not magic. Does anyone have any experience with these two books?
'All That the Rain Promises and More' is another option.

I'm new to this, but I would say a combination of guides is a must. I use a couple of guides Psilocybe guide by L.G. Nicholas and Kerry Obama and a Petersons field guide by McKnight.
I was able to download .PDF of both for quick reference on my smartphone. Which comes in handy to cross reference photographs.
Happy hunting!

From what I've heard, you'll want a decent guide that deals with your specific region over a great guide that doesn't. Having said that, I'm mostly familiar with guides dealing with the US west coast and can't really make suggestions for Australia.
Note that a good field guide can help you figure out the genus of the mushroom even if the particular species does not grow in your area. Less helpful if you only care about actives, but if you want to improve your overall ID skills you should certainly bring one hunting.
