Who here plays Magic? (the Gathering)

Hey all! Who all plays magic?
I've been playing on and off since 7th edition but more recently as I've been more active with the local magic community I've become pretty much a daily magic player I primarily play black decks, and blue black control are my favorite but white black is always fun. How about you guys?
Any one go to the Battle for Zendikar prerelease this weekend? If so how did everyone do? I went 3-1-1 with a white black ally deck and opened a Drana so that was sweet. Love my vampire ladies.
Also just a heads up I just made this tread today to serve as more or less an LNC type thing for us magic players. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22302643

i used to play quite a bit. started playing warhammer, and spent money on that instead, then i got older and i didn't have money to spend on shit like that anymore. I haven't bought a magic card since Nemesis probably. Even that was a revival for me. I played the most between the release of Revised and 6th edition. Still have some cards. I have a revised rock hydra and some serra angels and stuff like that. None of them are in great condition though, which is part of why i never sold them.

Nice! You should try getting back into it! Fun times for all!
Just brush up on the rules and what good in the current set and try checking out a draft or two. You'll probably lose a lot at first but you'll very quickly pick it up again. And you will meet so many cool people at drafts and a potential group to play with.

Mostly on the internet, but some irl. I bought a bunch of cards at an auction to sale but it brought back the desire to play.
I found a free app for MTG at the Google play store.

Nice! I mostly play with physical cards, But magic online has always had it's appeal to me.
I was even playing around with the idea of doing some Magic online Shroomery drafts or tournaments or whatever. More or less just getting togather a shroomery play group and causing some ruckas.

I haven't played in close to 2 years. I have some cards. Last deck I used is my primarily red/green deck but it actually has cards of every color in it so I claim it is a rainbow deck.

I used to play and still have some decks. Still have a ton on mtgvault.
Anyone interested and know a way to play? I used to use OCTGN, but it's a few gigs of data and not exactly simple to set up.

Like I was saying up there, if there is enough intrest I would totally be down to look into hosting some shroomery magic in whatever format interests you guys because Magic Online is always an option.

Landfall is going to make Red Green very strong in Zendikar. It was about the only thing that had any response to my black white ally deck at prerelease.

I still stand by OCTGN, but it IS a fucking process. 15 min. If you can figure out how to mount sets OK..., but it's all free, no ads, and you can play other card games (digimon, dominion, etc.) pay to play kinda excludes me though, sorry.

Yup that's the exact same way I have been for years!
I'll have a greatly great play group then for what ever reason I always end up losing contact with them then quitting for years at a time.
But since I started up again with this group I see no end in sight.
A friend invited me to go with him to a draft so I went and met so many awesome people. Between the rounds we all just go outside and have giant smoke sessions in the parking lot with lots of beer.
And after going twice a week for a month I was on a name to name basis with all of them. We all draft at the local shops together Monday-Wednesday-Friday and play EDH Tuesdays and Saturdays and there is always something going down on off days..
Now I'm constantly being invited over to play magic by everyone and running into magic friends randomly all over town. They are all some seriously good people.

You played since 7th edition, nice, I think I did too. Back then. But quit a long time ago. I was heavy into Invasion, Plainshift and Apocalypse, Odyssey, Onslaught, and Mirrodin etc, Loved playing the even older editions too.
In the end, the only variant I liked to play was a 40 card constructed Highlander. I know, it's probably odd... but to me it was the perfect mix of flavor and mechanic.
Problem was I became seriously addicted. Lived for it. Then I started to spend money on it that I should have spent on weed. There you have to draw the line.
Now, afraid to go back really. Addiction would hit hard I'm sure. But would love to play if someone just gave me a cool deck.
Cool you're so into it, really...
Love, Hanz.

I checked out Magic the Gathering online (free trial) it's MTG online I don't really care for the look or layout not something I'd pay for
I'm surprised too, the playstation version looked and felt great
and on a side note, I don't know why they ever did away with mana burn

you could but there were ways to cause your opponent to receive mana burn by making them tap cards
or cards that give extra mana I had one card that made all land count as 2 mana instead of 1 which could lead you to tap 2 land (4 mana) but only use 3 to cast a spell

You are correct, Landfall was first added in Zendikar back in 2009, But it hasn't been standard legal for years now. And now that we are returning to Zendikar for "Battle for Zendikar," It just makes sence to use that mechanic again, plus it's honestly much more useful this time around.

you could but there were ways to cause your opponent to receive mana burn by making them tap cards
or cards that give extra mana I had one card that made all land count as 2 mana instead of 1 which could lead you to tap 2 land (4 mana) but only use 3 to cast a spell
Mana burn was removed years and years ago because almost everyone thought it was stupid. But mana burn spells are still a thing especially in EDH. By mana burn spells I mean spells that cause your opponent to lose life for as much land they have tapped this turn. Had someone use one of those spells on me at instant speed when I was in the middle of an infinate mana combo. Shit sucked.

my understanding is that it was removed to simplify the game and make the rules easier for beginners It forces a certain level of mana management mana burn was/could be a legitimate tactic and discourages cheap tactics like infinite mana
my straight green deck is all about mana management I can easily produce 8-10 mana by my 3rd turn and have creatures with their power/toughness equal to land/mana in play

Cheep? Theres absolutly nothing cheep about equipping power artifact to my basalt monolith.
And ya, green mana ramp can be a little rediculous at times but the deck synergy can be hard to pull off some times and blue players will make your life hell. I mostly only play green in a green/black or whenever I feel like running an elf-ball.

Magic is one of the best table top games out there. I personally have over 35,000 cards and sixteen decks that I play frequently. You can't trip and play magic though, I usually just look at all the cool artwork instead lol.

If anyone is interested, here is a comprehensive guide on OCTGN, for free MTG here: http://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/magic-fundamentals/magic-software/337138-the-new-official-octgn3-mtg-thread
Unfortunately, while there once was an active chatroom full of players, I cannot seem to find it anywhere. Perhaps we can still benefit from this wonderful software? I'll be on it during the weekends, myself.
OCTGN is a great program though and also runs these games, so it's worth checking out:
7th Sea CCG A Game of Thrones LCG A Game of Thrones LCG 2.0 Android:Netrunner Call of Cthulhu LCG Cards Against Humanity Doomtown Duel Masters Duel Masters OCG Dune CCG Kaijudo Legend of the Five Rings Mage Wars Magic: the Gathering My Little Pony CCG Netrunner CCG Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Romance of the Nine Empires Sentinels of the Multiverse Spycraft CCG Star Realms Star Wars: The Card Game The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game VS System Vampire: the Eternal Struggle Warhammer 40,000 Conquest LCG Warhammer Invasion LCG

Yeah, there's a lot of depth to it.
You start by looking at the pictures, maybe play a few games. Some people get lost in the imaginative aspects. Soon after learning about the different mechanics, people usually start building a few decks; there are SOOOoo many themes out there. Before you know it, your whole life is gone! No money, no job, on the streets giving handjobs for boosters. I think it'd be perfect for you, go.

Sorry guys I have been really out of it these pat couple days.
But over the weekend I will look over OCTGN and get a good understanding in hope of possibly throwing together a free magic draft for Shroomery members next week an possibly making a weekly thing of it.

How many handjob's did you have to give before your first booster?
I've been working pole for 2 days now, and nothing to show for it.
