Walls on a flow hood?

I've seen them on hoods in some pictures of peoples labs. Wood or plexiglass walls stretching from the side of the hood to the edge of the work table.
Is there any advantages/ disadvantages?

my flow hood is small, 12X12, so i made plexyglass walls extending a foot out, basicly it ensures that turbulence at the edges of the flow arent mixing dirty air in with the clean air, its probably more usefull for small hoods, with larger hoods you are generally doing your work in the center of the hood where turbulence wont be an issue.

That's the hood. That's the actual flow hood. When we talk about flow hoods, were really talking about just that specific thing. Everything else is a HEPA filter with air driven by a fan. It really shouldn't be called a flow hood without the flow hood. I call it a cabinet. As in laminar cabinet, or sterile airflow cabinet, or flow cab.
The flow hood has a major advantage. It contains the sterile air flow and stops it from being able to mix with unfiltered air at the side. Additionally it makes it to where it doesn't matter if the flow is truly laminar since after running for a bit ensures the workspace has sterile work condition.

Ah right on, yea I get the confusion over he terminology those phrases just sorta work thier way in
I didnt know whether it might disrupt the laminar flow or not, so I never added one to my work space. That and it seems most home cultivators work without the hood and just the cabinet then
My set up is in my Sig below, its not that big but certainly enough that walls wouldn't hinder my elbow room or anything. When I work I shut off the air and seal the door, run the hood for a while first etc. But if the walls really give much of an advantage I think Ill try it out
I I imagine you need to wipe them down pretty thoroughly before turning it on.
I think I might just do the two on the side and not a ceiling over head, just two plexiglass walls from the sides to the edge of my table (Im getting a new table). Will the gap between the edge of the face of the filter and the side of the hood cause any problems in flow that would keep that from working correctly?
