That description has no relevance to eastern spirituality. In fact it sounds like exactly what it is: a neurotic westerner being given LSD psychotherapy.

To the contrary, I think that the techniques of "meditation" sound alot like what the person in the article was doing. He was focusing all of his attention in one direction. Like what people do when they focus on breathing.
If a person made that the main focus of their life (as the "gurus" do) - outside of the "spiritual-religious" context - they would be considered obsessive-compulsive.

According to Ram Dass, if Maharaj-Ji was "obsessive compulsive" about anything, as you want to describe it, it would be pure unconditional love. That's the main thing with maharaji and the guru. Pure unconditional infinite love.
I'm sure there are some spiritual leaders who do fall into that obsessive compulsive trap and become focused on only one way to achieve enlightenment or whatever you want to call it, but I don't think Maharaj-Ji was one of those types. At least the way he comes across in Be Here Now, seems like the real deal.

Well, you can criticize meditation all you want, but it looks like it pays off:

There is no such thing as bad trip.
