First time trying Popcorn Update
    #22300623 - 09/27/15 09:20 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Been a while since I've been on here and boy do I have some catching up to do. New teks and more knowledge. Love it! I wish I could remember my old login info, but oh well.

In the past I have always used WBS for my bulk grows. I do have some WBS jars of PE going but I also decided to give popcorn a try. Just to try something new mainly, and I'm super stoked! I found some 4lb bags of popcorn at the grocery store for 3 bucks. That bag was able to make 6 jars, however I opted to just roll with 5 jars. I used the basic simmer, dry, PC and inoculate method, and am using MS Penis Envy. I love how the popcorn cools down enough to Inoculate after just a few hours. I waited 4 hours and went for it. I plan on doing a monotub with coir/verm since I've always had success with that method. I'm praying for good things and will keep this updated as progress goes along.

Please by all means offer suggestions, criticism and whatever you may think will help. I've never used gypsum or coffee grounds or anything other than coir and verm, think I should? What benefits would there be with using popcorn? Once again, definitely give feedback and suggestions!

Wish this grow luck! Here are some pics of my jars after inoculation. Now the waiting begins!

UPDATE: Checked on my jars today and there is some nice rhizo growth in all jars. Very pretty and white. The only thing to note is that the growth is all at the bottom of the jars. From some reading I noticed a lot of people will shake popcorn after first signs of growth, so I went ahead and did that. There was a little more noticable growth in the center as well, but mostly just the bottoms. Either way I'm stoked and it's only been a week since inoculation. On a side note, my jars of WBS with MS PE have thrived! They were over 50% so I went ahead and gave them a shake as well. They too have only been going for a little over a week. They also have very nice rhizo growth and look outstanding. Sorry I didn't snap some pics before the shake, just didn't think about it.

This^

Hmm cmon OP, you know that'll only limit GE. What's the point of having a filter on your lids, if you're not gonna let it do its job.

I don't have the metal jar lids on there. Just the ring and the filters. Is this not a good thing? I read a few post where others did the same and had good results.

I got 4lb bags for about 3 bucks. So 6 bucks will make 12 jars which I suppose is more expensive that using WBS, but the new adventure is worth it.

Yeah, thats not a good thing. Coffee filters arent a suitable filter, I think you are thinking of tyvek, they kind of look the same. But even with that you still need the lid under the ring, with a hole drilled though.. Im not sure the size of the drill bit I use but its not very big... 1/4 inch?

Use tyvek or cut circles of kraft felt and put a double layer between lid and ring. Or you can simply pull a thick wad of poly fill through the hole.

These are jars with kraft felt filters, a double layer between the lid and ring over the drilled hole. You would do the same thing with Tyvek

These are lids made with Synthetic Filter Discs cut and siliconed in place over a GE hole on plastic one peice lids. SFDS are the best filters for lids, available fairly cheap from mushroom websites. There are several different ways they can be used

Don't use coffee filters. If you sterilized those jars you will need to do them over

Yea I know about tyek I just had no access to any and limited available time to grab some. This is the first time I've thrown coffee filters on there. In the past I've never used anything other than the lids with a hole drilled in them and foil over the top and had much success. Unfortunately those jars are already inoculated so I can't sterilize them again. I have more jars to prepare this weekend and I'll grab some tyvek while at the post office this week. Either way, wish these jars luck.
