Outdoor Monotub Question
#22299169 - 09/27/15 03:41 PM (8 years, 4 months ago) |

There are children in my home and I would prefer to not have my monotubs in the home unless I can't work something else out. My jars are getting close to casing and I would like to work out the logistics now. One side of my home never gets direct sunlight, but it has been in the 90's recently. It typically cools in October in these parts, but not significantly. I would expect the temps through October to be 75 to 85, November 65 to 80 and December 60 to 75. I can move my tubs into a garage once it cools, but right now the garage is just too warm.

Advice?

You might want to search cold fruited cubensis. You don't need to worry about sheltering them when it gets what people in your climate might call "cold."

I'm not worried about the "cold" temps. My garage has good ambient lighting and stays reasonably warm. I'm more concerned with the warm temps. Am I going to struggle with humidity or will they wilt in the heat? I just checked temp in the shade near peak temp and it was 89 degrees.

Also, I picked this side of the house because I garden a lot on the other side and this side doesn't have any foot traffic whatsoever. Gate and door are locked.

yeah it looks like a perfect spot. Plenty of ambient light but little if any direct light.
Wish I had more experience with high temps.

There is also an electrical outlet that I could conceivably use for a fan or humidifier or whatever else I might need. I'm just not sure what that might be.
Indoors is not out of the question just takes a little more juggling and creative story telling.

I bought lions mane for my kids to grow along side of me...my son is 7 and I am proud of his sterile technique...he does his own agar work in my SAB lol...he has yet to create a clean culture (9 transfers) but he is totally realizing the error of his ways...they love that shit.

I thought about that... That's a great idea! I love edible mushies too. If my kids get good at growing them I won't have to buy them anymore. They already know I'm working on a project, but I always am. I just don't want them to reach in an grab one to eat or anything terrifying like that.

They know my mushrooms are "poisonous"...I figured the only way to keep them away from my tubs and keep them from talking about them at school is to involve them to the point that it's as normal as our regular house plants...no kids talk about their house plants lol.

A greenhouse seems like a huge commitment. I'd like to get through the first few flushes before I commit to something like that. Also, few folks have greenhouses in these parts. We grow outside! I have a beautiful garden. I think if I built a greenhouse people might raise an eyebrow.

Smoking weed is normal...hot boxing your house while your kids are in there is totally not normal though...

I completely agree. My kids are used to my projects around the house. I've just never taken on one like this. I'm very open and honest with both of them so I feel like a liar when I skate around the truth. My daughter has been around while I've been working on my grains. I told her I was working on making food for mushrooms but that I wasn't sure if it was going to work. They know I love to garden and cook, so I doubt she even thought twice about what I was doing.

Good shit... kids could care less about shit...UNTIL it's a fuckin secret, then it becomes the holy grail of mysteries...then it's all bad... dude told me "if your driving down the street and someone is walking out of their front door, you won't even notice them...same scenario but the dude is climbing out of his window, and your definitely gonna spot his ass" ...hide in plain sight basically

Still, for space considerations I'd love to know if my temps will be a problem outside. I've read about a few people in Florida and Hawaii using monotubs outside... While I'm coastal there isn't as much humidity here.

I think the shrub idea would be excellent at keeping the Temps down...but it's cooling already outside...the humidity shouldn't matter since the environment inside the tub is controlled by the polyfil and substrate...

Yes you can do outdoor monos. I'd recommend a casing. Just gotta keep them glistening
It'll be fine op. I've done indoor and outdoor Open air growing in under 10% humidity. Temps can go down to 40 or so at night, and still fruit.
Although not documented I've also done outdoor monos a few years back. It was pretty good too.

Mad, Is there a specific race that would perform better than others in his temps? I'm curious about this too.

Anything local to him for sure could grow in a bed or a pot outside.
He could even attempt pan cyans or something in a tub outside if the humidity is pretty low. Pan cincts could for sure grow outside in a pot. They pretty much grow everywhere
Pretty much every cube is resilient and will grow in almost any condition if you keep it glistening with no pooling water

Originally I wanted to grow pan cyans in an outdoor bed but once I realized they were more work than cubes I decided to give them a try first before the pans. I also am hoping someone has a print they would be willing to trade for something I might already have.

outdoor tubs offer protection from pests (snails, slugs, birds) which come for the grain or the developing fruits. much safer in a tub

I'm so excited! Haha hopefully I can perfect this technique so I can try other, more demanding species.
Do you use mesh or wire of any kind over your holes to keep insects and critters from getting in or just polyfil?

just polyfill.
I have had rats climb into tubs through 1 1/2" and 2" monotub holes. I've had a total of three over a number of years.
set a trap .... snap .. no more problem. sad for the rat

sorry, but it is unacceptable for them to get into the tubs

mesh would work. just haven't used it

Aw hell no! I won't have any pests eating my fruit! There are some nosy ass opossums in my neck of the woods. I'll just have to make sure my lids are secure. I can probably retrofit my tubs with wire or mesh using silicone to secure it on the inside then stuff it with polyfil when fruiting.
