New Obsidian Variety!
    #22298277 - 09/27/15 12:15 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

I've been finding this new type of obsidian in my electric blue rough piles. It comes out of this aurora craziness that I used to be pissed off about finding instead of the blue. It has zones of black where it's just filled with millions of specks of glitter in all colors. Looks almost exactly like dichroic glass. It's rarer than fire obsidian and the blue. Nobody has ever tried to sell it that I know of. It's gorgeous as fuck so I'm adding it into my jewelry along with my fire and blues. Dichroic Obsidian, I'll get some picks up later if I can get a good shot after I cab some up. It's in the saw slabbing right now. So exciting to be cutting a new material and taking it to the shows this winter!

I'd love to hit that on my lap wheel. Good eye!

Looks to be a fire obsidian with unique crystallite sizing (thermal history) that caused the seams to fuse incompletely.

I've been a rockhound for 25 years, and I don't recall ever seeing dichroic looking obsidian at any G&LW shows.

Yeah I ran into a little bit of bright pink fire while digging the electric blue last year. This stuff runs with it. It blew me away because fire has never been found anywhere but glass buttes and this is almost 200 miles south. We dug up almost the entire zone this was found in so there's likely no more there. Someone else claimed that pit this year and cleaned up the little bit we left, but they likely don't know to look for this stuff. I know a lot of miners and nobody has ever said anything about this stuff.

That is mighty trippy man.  I can't say I've seen something along those lines that rings a bell..  hella special indeed.  I want some.

Of all the possibilities for new varieties it's FUCKING DICHROIC! I really hit the jackpot with that pit. I pulled multiple tons of electric blue out, the world's tightest and brightest rainbow, and this stuff. This is gonna be a big deal in Tucson this year. I need to get the word out as much as possible. Might even be worth putting an ad in the gem show catalogs.

It reminds me of the 'galaxy' the cat in Men In Black had on it's collar.. it kind of looks like it could be one of those hubble telescope shots...

It must be kind of wild to pick that up out of the dirt.  You wouldn't happen to have a picture of it still in the dirt would you?

I have pics of the pit we worked, but not this specific rock. We pulled out about 1000 pounds daily and there's no time to check for oddities.

This stuff is incredible, always appreciated obsidian living a stones throw away from Glass Mountain.

Please let me know when it will be available for sale.

I wish I could find more of this stuff. I know I have a bit but it's hard to locate in the rough until you just happen to come across it. I think I've made 5 cabs of it so far. I thought I had one that changed from blue to green but it turned out to be just silver when it finished up. It's also kinda subtle. You have to look at it to really see what's going on. It doesn't just jump out at you like the fire obsidian does.

It's cool but still not nearly as nice as the fire. I polished a few of the best fire pieces I've ever seen in the last week. I'll post them when I can get good pics. The fire continues to amaze me with almost every piece I work with. There seems to be no end to the color schemes and patterns coming from the dike we dug.
