A lot of stores don't have security cameras in the parking lot because they can be held liable for damage done to cars in the lot if the camera doesn't capture the act.

What if you get pulled over with some weed in a non-rec state and you don't have time to delete anything? Cop's walking up to the car and you're hurriedly deleting shit off your dashcam doesn't look very good, gives them PC to detain you and hassle you. But IDK how easy it is to just delete things from there. And also wouldn't you want it on at the same time to make sure the cops don't do some underhanded shit like they're known for doing? It seems like it's a double-edged sword.

In that situation you could have it off with freshly formatted memory cards and should you get pulled over turn it on. It isn't hard to wire up a toggle switch to cut it on/off.

They'd need a warrant or PC to try and look at the footage, no? Wouldn't that fall under the same rules of a car search?
Alas, for me, that's not an issue since I don't ride dirty at all. Shit, I don't even smoke buds.
I mostly want one for protection from fraud/lies and capturing the crazy shit one sees while on the road.

And hopefully the one I get will be discreet, so if I was the one to fuck up, I'd just stay quiet about having it and nobody would know it was even there.. Although, I'm not one to not take responsibility for my actions if I fuck up and am at fault... So that's kind of a moot point.

So if you crashed into someone and it was your fault, you'd admit it? Sorry but that's kinda dumb. Admitting fault in ANY situation like that whether it is or isn't your fault, is legally compromising. That's like telling the police where the drugs are hidden to save them the trouble of having to look. They'll find it if they find it, and hopefully they don't. But telling them makes no sense.

If I caused an accident and it was for whatever reason 100% my fault, I wouldn't go and claim it was their fault or whatever. I wouldn't like it if somebody did that to me, so I'm not gonna do that to someone else. I'll man up and accept responsibility for my actions, like everyone should.
Drug possession vs fault of an accident are apples and oranges.

I would likely stay quiet and try not to incriminate myself as much as possible, but I'm definitely not going to sit there and say it's their fault when it clearly wasn't.

I have a dash cam... Lukas LK7900 ACE w/ a blackbox battery backup http://lukashd.com/eng/product_info/blackbox_14_1.html
Did a TON of research before deciding on it. 1. Records in HD @ 1080p. Crystal clear images during the day, really good quality at night too. Can read license plates from quite a good distance.
2. Records onto SD cards, up to 128GB. I have an 80GB card in there, and it's good for roughly 5 hours or HD footage.
3. I have it hard wired to my fuse box, so it's always powered from the car, even when it's off. I have a Lukas "blackbox" battery backup wired with it. The blackbox monitors the car battery voltage.. if it drops below a certain voltage (like while recording while parked - I have it set to 12.1V).. if it drops below the preset voltage, then the battery takes over powering the camera so it doesn't drain your car battery. When the car is on and running... it is powering the camera.. and also charging the blackbox battery backup at the same time.
4. It records while parked and the car off (if hard-wired). If it detects movement in front of the camera, the camera will turn on and record. You can adjust the movement sensitivity. Mine usually picks up trees moving or cats walking around in the alleyway But if anyone is ever messing around your car late at night - you will have video footage of it.
5. It has the highest operating temperature range of any camera I looked at in the <$300 range. That matters to me living in Socal where its hot all the time pretty much. Read reports of other dash cams with not as high of a range, shutting off automatically or going into failsafe mode because it was too hot. This camera is good up to 80c.
6. It has a G-shock sensor. When it detects abnormal Gs.. it will automatically save a 1 minute clip. For example say you go around a corner REALLY hard or hit a bump or something. The camera will detect that movement, and save a special "event" clip of 30 seconds before and 30 seconds after the event. The "events" are saved in a separate folder and never automatically deleted or overwritten. So this is your 1 minute clip if you ever get into an accident.
7. Has GPS. Lots of other features.
My advice... Don't get a $50 dash cam.. cause you get what you pay for. No sense buying a dash cam if it looks like it's recorded by a potato and has no features. A decent one is gonna cost around $150-200. More for memory/HDD, or any special blackbox/DVR or whatever.
Here's a quick video I shot while on a cruise with my euro crew This is AFTER the shitty youtube auto compression tore it to shreds... the original is much higher quality.. crystal clear
I got it mostly for insurance purposes, in case I ever get in an accident or something weird happens. Haven't needed it yet. But I have caught two good accidents on it in front of me. Also got it because I've been watching liveleak religiously for the past ~3 years and I'm like fuck why don't I have a dashcam? Everyone in Russia does.
Only regret? Not getting one for the rear too. Because not a month after I got the front dash cam, I got rear ended by some fuckhead at a red light and he took off. I was cursing pretty good.
Lukas sells a dual kit, one for the front and for the rear. In hindsight I wish I would have sprung for that one when I got mine. I paid like ~$360 for mine on ebay, that's including the blackbox battery backup and it came with a 16GB SD card which is not really sufficient. The dual kit was like 450.. worth it. I have to pay a lot more than that to get my bumper replaced.

Nice post. Thanks I'm glad Burke was right and that you saw this.
Yeah, dude.. I'm still in the early stages of deciding what to get. I don't have a ton of spending money, so I don't want to drop a lot on it, but at the same time, I want good quality recording.
I don't need a lot of bells and whistles, just pretty much standard shit. I don't need GPS or any of that... I do want it wired to the fuse box so I don't have to fuck with it every day. I'd like the motion sensing to catch a break in, but that's a feature I'd be willing to do without if I had to. I'd also like to be able to catch plate #s, so that may mean I'll need better resolution and therefore have to spend a bit more.
Would I need to buy a wiring kit or something to hardwire it in to the fuse box, or do they usually come with the shit needed?

check out the mobius. It's about 80 bucks, 1080p, and about the size of a xbox controller battery pack.
They're good cams just don't do what I did and wire it to a toggle switch and forget to turn it off on a hot summer day above a black dash in a 140 degree car.
alternatively there is the G1W that is quite a bit larger with similiar features. If you are get something with motion mode and live in a hot climate it's best to get a capacitor version
Street guardian also makes a unit that is about 200 that has a very small camera wired to dvr you can put in your glove box. Has motion detect and other bells and whistles.

They usually come with the shit needed. At least mine came with a cig adapter plug and also a hard-wiring kit. I had to buy an add-a-fuse thing from the auto store so I could punch it into the fuse box.
If you do hard wire it and you have one that records motion when parked, you are probably going to want a blackbox kit like what I have..something that goes inbetween the camera and the fuse box.. so if the battery voltage drops too low.. the backup battery takes over. Last thing you want is a dead battery cause you had the sensitivity too low and the camera was recording shit all night or something.
You can check out this site for reviews and shit - http://dashboardcamerareviews.com/best-dash-cams-of-2015/ As you can see most of the good cameras are in the ~$150+ range. They recommend this one as a cheap one and it seems to be fairly decent - http://www.gearbest.com/car-dvr/pp_113549.html But only supports 32GB SD card (not enough).. and seems you have to charge it... and there's no video of night shots from them.. so I question its quality. Being that it's 2015 you shouldn't really settle for any dashcam that can't record in 1080p. Look around that site, they have a lot of good reviews. Here's the Lukas 7900 review http://dashboardcamerareviews.com/lukas-lk-7900-ace/ I went with it because it has hands down the widest operating temperature range of any dashcam and the image quality is super high. Night video is not the best out there but it is still very very good. The new one is the Ara - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00QTG49B0
It all really depends what you are looking for in a dashcam. Whether you want it to be super discrete, what features, how good of picture quality, etc etc.

Cool... Thanks, guys. (seriously appreciate it)
I've decided I'm definitely gonna get one.. Not sure when, but before Christmas for sure.
But yeah, I definitely want it wired in so there are no cords or forgetting to plug it in/turn it on.

Do you really need over 32GB if you're just wanting it to record a few minutes of a specific event (accident or whatever)?? I don't need it to record my whole Sunday drive, just to loop and catch any event that may happen.
Also, "seems you have to charge it"... If it's wired in, is that still an issue?

That particular dashcam has an internal battery. It says it comes with a car charger and a USB charger. So no hard wire comes with it. Although I'm sure you could still hard wire it 32GB is enough for some clips or a couple hours of footage or whatever. I just like having a ton of storage.

No the only reason you'd charge it is if it has a battery and you want to record without it plugged in. Wiring them up to hide the cords isn't hard at all. If you just wire it to an accessory fuse in your fuse box the camera will turn on/off automatically when you turn the ignition on/off.
For the memory, more isn't needed but is nice. For instance if you are on a long drive and catch some shit on camera you want to save. If your camera loops every few hours you'd have to either deal with it being overwritten or pull the card and not record for the rest of the drive. There's calculators out there for recording time based on bitrate but most cams record somewhere around 5 or 6 gb per hour.
also if it just comes with a cig adapter cord all you gotta do to hard wire it off is chop off the cig outlet plug, strip the ends of the wires and crip/wire nut/solder them to an ad a fuse kit you plug into an existing fuse outlet

I've never done much electrical work, so I may have to get someone to help me with the wiring and running/hiding the wire..but yes, I want it so as soon as the key is turned it begins.
I read that some cams have a button you can press when an event happens and it'll lock that file/timed area.. Likely a setting in the cam to tell it how much on either side of the button press to save.
In any event, I genuinely appreciate the input you've provided, fellas I am actually excited for some reason to get one.
