Why does polyfill keep up RH while allowing FAE ?
    #22295971 - 09/26/15 09:19 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

Perhaps the answer is rather obvious idk im not really an expert on this topic.
Ive been considering this all day...  You put holes in a monotub for FAE and you put polyfill in the holes to keep up the RH. My first thought is something like "water molecules are larger than air so they are trapped" but then I consider, polyfill isnt a micro pore membrane in fact id say loosely fitted polyfill has rather large holes in comparison to a water molecule. In which case why not just make many very small perforations in the tub rather than huge holes ? What gives...

the substrate provides RH as fresh air evaporates the moisture held in the bulk substrate material. there's enough moisture after spawning to field capacity substrate to completely take care of the first flush, without any additional maintenance, if you do it right.

but most importantly RH doesn't really fucking matter unless you're in the desert. if your caps are not drying out and cracking  you can have more FAE

It acts like a filter, by tightening or loosening it you can adjust how hard/easy it is for air to enter or escape

You wanna let as much FAE as possible without causing dry spots. I like a nice layer of beads on the surface, like this

constantly, but with a little bit of a dry spot starting directly in front of the bottom polyfill. Thats how I dial my tubs in, I know if I loosen the bottom poly any more itll start drying out the sub.

Bottom real tight, top holes real loose. If you start seeing dry spots tighen the bottom, if it persists tighen up the top up soon. It takes a little practice but youll get the hang of it
