build a Shot gun fruiting chamber. adding anything to BRF cakes just dilutes their nutrition, BRF is one of the most nutritious substrates cubensis will eat. coffee can be an alright additive, with cakes use diluted coffee liquid not the grounds.
shot gun fruiting chamber is the only fruiting chamber that you use perlite with that actually works well. it's 100% passive and it's more automated than any "automated FC" i have ever seen built anyway

Skip the coffee additive. Follow the regular tek. If you havent, watch RR's LetsGrowMushrooms videos on youtube, it will show you everything you need to know.
For fruiting chamber, look up shot gun fruiting chamber.. clear plastic tote, 1/4 inch holes drilled on ALL SIX sides in a 2" by 2" grid patter, 5" of dampend perlite in the bottom, raised up at the corners off the table.
Oh you guys beat me to it

If you are new...I would leave out the coffee and other additives, except maybe Gypsum... Go by the tek...resist the urge to deviate until you understand it.
Welcome to the Shroomery!!! Good vibes, and

the official "bod is being a dick with his advice for new growers"
I would skip making the TEK better 1. no one excluded additives from BRF tek because we're holding out on you... there not there for a reason 2. fucking grow the things first before you come up with your own ideas. you're not outsmarting any one, it's been thought of 100s of times before, trust me. 3. how come every noob can make a PF cake and follow those directions but when it comes to the fruiting chamber they dick it up like mad. just fucking build it according to the directions, modify it after you have some experience, practice, skill, etc...

keep us updated

Ok I will update if I have successful colonization, then deal with fruiting chamber issues. According to what I've read, a fan disrupts the natural air flow which is a problem for me. what if it's not directly hit by the fan?

It could be ok, what type of fan are we talking? Just do your best to keep it out of the air currents. You might have to mist a little more than usual but if you can't do it anywhere else what can you do

it's best if you can find a room without a fan.
perlite is naturally going to evaporation cool itself since you hydrate it with water. evaporation and the cooling effect(like sweat on your skin) create an area of low pressure in the perlite in the bottom of the SGFC. this draws air in through the bottom holes, ideally you have your florescent light above the chamber which provides some heat albeit minimal since it's florescent. the slight heat makes an area of slightly higher pressure and air is cycled out through the side and top holes. CO2 produced by the mycelium doesn't flow out the bottom or the sides. it mixes with air basically immediatley.(infinite miscability in this system) and is carried out.
a fan in the room fucks with the chimney effect that's created in the SGFC, chances are if you have a fan in the room you'll have to mist more often. without a fan you can mist a couple times a day or even go on vacation and come back to some shrooms. with a fan in the room cracked caps is your enemy.

I would recommend leaving the fan out, or off... I tried that and when I turned the fan off...I had much better results. Just my 2cents.

Yeah I mean my state right now is hot as fuck so I need to have a fan on all day but it's nothing too extreme, I usually keep it on a low flow setting throughout the whole day. I also got an air purifier that I was gonna use so the mushrooms had nicer air to breath. I could take it into a different room at different times (I don't have to keep it secret), but overall it just needs to stay in my room. Maybe I can build a nice sheet fort for it and also put it behind a dense object. But overall it's not that major of a fan, nothing too crazy. I'm excited

You are smart. Anyways, I guess maybe I could just put the thing in a closet on most days. I will try to avoid the fan as much as possible, and maybe revert to sheet fort when I have to??

6-12 inches for a 26W spiral fluorescent (replaces 100w incandescent) 6500K(color temperature) bulb in a reflective housing.
I think you'll be fine, you'll just kind of have to wait and see how it looks and then make some judgments or post pics

If your lid is clear... I like to mount mine at a slight angle about 8-12 inches away. I use the 6500k blue CFL bulbs...they don't put out much heat. And do yourself a favor buy a $5 timer at Walmart to plug your light into...so it clicks on and off every 12 hours automatically. I think Bod, just beat me to it...lol

I have no experience with LED's...maybe Bod or another user can chime in, but if you want a cheap light fixture, there are clamp on lights, and I even found a cheap lamp with a flexible arm where a second bulb can go... I bought the lamp, CFL bulb, and timer for less than $30 at Walmart. For the bulb, you want a 6500k blue Compact Fluorescent Light. They are usually 15-20watts, but they replace 60watt incandescent bulbs. Hope this helps.

I can get a real light set up I'm not worried too much about saving money. Is there a nice set up on Amazon you can refer me to?
Or am I going to have to go to a grow supply store and buy parts individually?

You can also always just use indirect sunlight. You generally have a lot having the sgfc elevated in a very open area anyways. Just have it in an open bright area

idk shit about LED being sufficient. i'm sure there's something that works out there but most mushroom farms use LED to fill in shadows or supplement daylight/artificial rater than outright LED grow

Just get a CFL. Bulb from the drug store in the 6500K range, and an old lamp from the thrift shop or something to use as a fixture

I put mine at an angle because I stack tubs...if you are just doing one tub you can put it above it...you basically just want it around 8-12 inches away. Most people on here don't buy complex light setups, that I know of anyway... Most just use clamp lights, etc. I use a combination of clamp lights and the lamps I mentioned before. Sorry don't have an Amazon link for you, I bought my lights locally. The bulb is the important part.

Hmmmm, so it seems like a 6500k is just a normal 60 wat spiral bulb which I have plenty of in my house. I already have a fixture for the bulb . As for the angle and multiple tubs, yes I'm only doing one tub. 4 half pint cakes

You need the 6500k ones...that number indicates the color frequency...it means it's more in the blue/daylight spectrum... They sell them at Walmart... Make sure it says 6500k on the box.

if you can't find a 6500k at the store 5000-6500k works.

I just bought a 6500k bulb... So about the substrate and sterilization, is it okay to just use a rubber band on top of the foil? The video I watched the guy poked two holes in the lid, then screwed on the lid until right when it met resistance, then he put foil on top. Will the steam pressure ruin it or no, I sound like an idiot. And also how much water are you putting in the pot?

WHats that for? I wouldn't put a rubber band over the foil no, you want steam to be able to penetrate into the jar. I doubt it would make too much of a difference but I wouldn't do it.. no need to anyways.

The liquor can do amazing things I feel. As long as you moderate and do it when your body allows it to I mean why not? Usually whenever I'm on a psychedelic trip I consume a little bit of alcohol to open things up a bit. Booze is kind of a beautiful thing in my opinion... I just go with 100 proof rye whiskey. With ice of course

Lol still air is kind of the same as air free zone right? I don't like memorizing terminology

Getting ahead of myself with the fruiting chamber. Fingers crossed these stupid spores even come today

This is what happens when you don't get terminologies right though. Everyone's like where the hell did you get this information? When really if you said a poor sab, they'd give you their opinions. In my opinion you want a real sab. That's too small and way too easy to move the air around in a small thing.

Well I have a huge tub I can set up but idk about putting extensions in there and all of that. I kind of can't spend any more money for a while lol. I can just cut some holes in it the size of my arms and work in that? I'll post a pic later

A tub with holes for your arms is perfect. Anything more is just to make it look fancy, maybe offer a little draft protection. I couldn't see any kind of arm attachment offering more than a 5% increase in effectiveness if your technique was otherwise good. It's for comfort and to satisfy our nagging human brains.

Spores came today. I inoculate two jars , but the other two I am going to pressure cook the jars for another 90 mins. Don't want to put all my eggs in one basket...

I put the two jars I inoculated into a shoe box, then into a black trash bag, and in my closet. I will check on them in what 3 or 4 days? Other two will be in a separate shoe box and bag later tonight

Straight from northern bc... Waiting to infest substrate. update 2.6: the substrate is in pressure cooker and i would like to eat it myself. smells amazing Update new 7.0: everything is stored in dark warm areas. How long for these half pint jars to finish??? When should I post a pic of what they look like?

Could take up to 2-3 weeks to show growth, pull up a chair, take your shoes off.
Could happen within as few as 3-5 days though. Not so likely, but possible.

Ok cool, I'll leave them alone for a while then. A couple of them are starting to show some fuzz like material at the points I inoculated. I'm just going to leave them until the 2 week mark (the 17th) then post pics to see if you guys think it's okay to start the first flush on some or all of them. Should I add another date In there to check for infections? I heard playing with them too much can cause bruising ...

Why would you start the "first flush" 2 weeks in? Chances are they won't be fully colonized in 2 weeks, especially if you don't see growth now.

Only one starting to show noticeable growth. I read that keeping it in the dark was a myth, but this is one of two that was kept in a dark area. (I moved them out of a closet a while ago)

The closet I was leaving it in was getting too hot (80-82 degrees) and I read it gets hotter in the jar so I moved it about 3 days ago

For some reason only this one jar is showing noticeable growth since inoculation. Other 3 still look like they are in the premature damp fuzz period. this one is a beast though

One of the reasons could be I put a different strain in each jar ...

Let me tell you something my granny told me. Tinfoil dunce hats arent cool. Sorry bud but that jar looks like a sad lonely dunce.
also don't see how it's stylish. Its not even close to perfect. Edges sticking out and shit. I'd say 3/10 for trying. Now get rid of it before it ruins your dry verm layer by condensation dripping from it into your holes

Hit a lull in progress. Weather has been fucked way too hot so I have been keeping them under a blanket in my overly air conditioned room. I'm starting to get worried they won't colonize the substrate properly and they are all starting to smell a bit fishy. Also signs of some yellowish discoloration in the two most developed jars. I would calculate my odds of success at about 35%. Will post pics this weekend for 3 week mark

Heres a tip as well, the dry verm layer on top in pf jars actually works pretty damn good as a contamination barrier. That is, untill you start handling the jar every day, tilting it on its side, bumping lifting and placing back down- all this kind of action is risking contaminations making it past the dry verm barrier.
You need to check them MAYBE once a day if you're OCD. I'd say once every few days, and thats a quick glance to make sure an obvious contamination isn't rampaging, until they are fully colonized.
I know you're excited but you are fuckin it up for yourself man.

What does that have to do with anything? He's known it for a while, I've known it for a while, pretty sure most teks say not to disturb the verm barrier. You might indeed be fucking yourself there.

That sounds like a plan... you'd wish you hadn't been handling them when they are getting close to 100% and they've shrunk a little, and that contam barrier falls right in there between the cake and glass and leaves your cake vulnerable... no need to handle them...just admire.

Another jar is starting to show amazing growth also. This one seems to have two miniature pin mushrooms growing on one side but the other side hasn't been fully colonize yet (at all). This is going to get interesting {the mushroom pin showings are in the bottom right part of the picture}

In one of the cans the smell was bad and it was 100% infected in one of the inoculation point so I threw it out and rinsed it. I am going to get more syringe but only try one cake this time and try to clean up my sterilization methods. I think maybe I put too much verm on top? I heard it prevents proper oxygen flow. I was careful about not packing it too tight... And for the verm in the brf mix, I grounded it up super fine , is that what should be done? What should I do different in creating the cake ? Other than that playing with them has definitely made them all iffy. the one fruiting in the jar still smells nice but yeah I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up not being good enough for a solid substrate to be fruiting . We will see but I'm getting 4 more pf classic syringes in a couple weeks and I will just leave them in my fridge for a while. Or do you put them in room temp?

No, a loose layer of vermiculite is fine and that wouldn't have caused contamination, anyway.
Thanks to Pasteur, life must come from life :V

I think you should go by wherever you are reading that recipe. I have read at least 1,000 recipes for substrate, and after trying a bunch we came to the conclusion none of them were really superior and just used parboiled rice because it was the cheapest and easiest. As you say, the rice flour can tend to be quite compact which is probably the reason for adding the vermiculite but that's complicating things a good deal, IMO...
I even put some vermiculite on the bottom I think, to absorb any pooled water.
I don't remember 100%; that was back when I was doing PF jars which I stopped a month or two in.

Why is it that whenever I say the word faggot all of a sudden people respond lol. Verm on the bottom too? That sounds pretty cool. I might try that... Other than that the main issue was that I played with them too much to avoid High temperatures mainly. But finally it's consistently in the 70s here so I can leave them alone in a closet
