Garage grow room build & grow
    #22295943 - 09/26/15 09:15 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

With my small martha grow chamber cramping my style i've decided to plan a new 7'x10' walk in growroom. All of the parts will be removed from my martha greenhouse to build this. I'm currently rounding up used lumber so all i need to buy is panda film, screws, and lights all totaling around $200. I already scored free used 8" and 6" ducting. It will be located in my garage where the temperatures are fairly stable between 74-83 in summer when it's 105 out, i can only guess 50-70 in the winter. I will be using a radiant space heater for the colder nights. Im currently torn between using pails or poly tubes, also working out what substrate to use straw vs free mixed mulch. There will probably also be one shelving unit in there from my martha for growbags, jars and smaller grows. This winter ill be growing blues and kings and who knows what else. Any critiques or design flaws you see please feel free to point out.

The wood and duct will be the footprint. The doorway will be where the duct is. You can see the exhaust fan on the floor.

Looks pretty sweet, can you go bigger though? If you use 2/3 primordia, 1/3 fruiting in that space your usable fruiting space is only 23sqft. or about 5'x 5'. Each bag or column of buckets is going to need about 18" x 18" to leave room for fruits; allowing for 3 bags or 12 buckets. Say a bag weighs 25lb with a 20% wet BE you get 5lbs per bag over several weeks; less than your 10 lb/week goal. You might be able to get a bit more out of the buckets but considering the longer fruiting times and delays between flushes you're going to need more storage space.

In our experience 10 lb/week needs a minimum of 10x10 room, we used a mix of buckets and bags and have moved to bags, mostly for the cleaning issues with buckets and the massive amount of space they take up. The plastic waste sucks though.

I'm sure you've already checked this guy out, he's maxed his capacity with filter bags.

Far too much light for that small space. 1 x 5ft will be plenty

Thanks solarity for the lighting input. Ill look for 4' floros, maybe even free, and run 14W CFLS on the corners if needed since i already have em.

@ moonlightmushrooms  I plan to have 6 logs or 5 rows of pails giving about 8" between each 10" log, so yea ~18" per unit like you recommend. I wish i had more space but hopefully with good genetics i can get a better BE. I plan to move in february into house with a 2 car garage or workshop, there i can build a larger unit or expand this one. My guestimate calculations are 5 lbs per log over 6 weeks 3 flushes which gives me 10 lbs a week possibly (5lbs x 12 units/6 weeks = 10). I also plan to make 5' or 6' logs so hopefully that will better utilize my footprint. I'll have to see if my back is up for that task as a 6'x10" log must weigh around 50-60 lbs in straw and 60-70 with the mulch i'm using.

Im with you on the plastic waste. I hate it but it seems to be a necessary evil and huge timesaver. I noticed some of my pails contaminated after re using when they had green mold previously in them. I scrubbed with soap and water well and used bleach and still i got some mold spots. I wash my lids in the dishwasher for the heat to sanitize it but i my wife hates it. I can only imagine doing 50 pails when i've only been doing 10-20 pails over the last few months. I think pails would be much more realistic on a large scale if there was a pail washer/sanitizer unit, like a large dishwasher.

Slight change of plans. The unit will be made of used fence material instead of wood. I will notch the pipe with a hole saw and weld then paint with rustoleum. I will actually wrap this unit instead of lining the inside. Ill add two beams running the length for hanging bags.

You could just buy one of these- https://www.menards.com/main/building-materials/yard-buildings-outdoor-storage-accessories/greenhouses/8-x-12-weatherguard-greenhouse/p-2366214-c-10122.htm?freeFormRowId=. I have one outside. Bought it on clearance for around $200 a couple years ago. Attached a couple extra purlins using 1/2" conduit and pipe strapping to hang logs from. Beefed the GH up with self tapping screws. I occasionally see similar ones on Craigslist as well.

What's the fun of buying it when I can make a diesel one for almost free . I just got the thumbs up on taking the steel and a frame built from this steel should support 1000 lbs of logs easy. Also I need it to be panda film to keep my nosey neighbors at bay. I'm going to snag the steel this week and start notching everything with a hole saw. I'll borrow my buddies welder and hopefully get the frame up by monday. And hopefully harvests and market sales keep up to pay for the panda film and floro.

I got all the steel cut and ground down for welding, just need to finish smushing in the ends for a 360 weld. Hopefully ill have it framed up this weekend and start on my exhaust ducting.

Updated blueprint with steel tubes. Actual size will be 10.5'x 7'x7' with a 3.5' door

I've been pondering not having the exhaust fan for suspicion reasons. Having a noisy fan that close to the outside you would definitely hear it and i don't want nosey neighbors. I think ill just have a 7' x "1 passive vent along the whole bottom of the chamber with a screen over it, that would be 3x the area of the 6" intake fan. I'll be sure to tape all the joints and build a tight door. Welding will commence next weekend. I finished prepping all the tubes today. Hopefully this thing will be operational by early Nov.

Passive exhaust should be just fine as you'll have positive pressurization from your intake. I would use a screen on tbe outside and maybe a filter for ac returns on the inside  don't want any bugs or gnats coming in.

I have some window screen i plan to run, although i might invest in some fine poly mesh to keep the small critters out like fungus gnats and fruit flies.

I got the panda film on order, as well as two more ultrasonic foggers, misting setup, and 14" poly tube from papermart. I plan to run a power strip off my digital control box to power the five ultrasonic foggers. I picked up a 48" T8 fluorescent fixture w daylight bulbs. Welding should commence this weekend.

These are the misters i'm going with. I have two Orbit 20066 kits that i'll zip tie to the hanger tubes and a Raindrip R675CT Analog 3-Dial Water Timer which will be set for 3 or 5 min on cycles every 1,2,3,4,6 or 8 hours. Ill pick up a water filter and Y next time i make a home depot run.

Panda film walls, just came in the mail today as well as poly tube. The floor will stay concrete unless I run into issues with it. It's sealed concrete and a fine finish so it should be good as is. We ran out of welding wire so I still have a few more welds and I need to hang the third log rail. The rails on the top will be where I hang my bags from. I'll be doing 6 logs per rail and three rails total. If its too tight ill scale down to only using the two outside rails. Each log will be 9" dia 4-5 foot long and weigh around 40-50 lbs. I'll finish welding in the morning then start framing the door and filter housing later in the week. We both hung by one of the log rails and it didn't budge. That's 370lbs total.

Nice.
Gonna be sweet.
I'm afraid you'll have more water than you hope for on the floor. If so, you could run a drain to outside in use gravel for a floor. Then your garage can be a garage again one day.
What are you going to grow in there?

He's right dude. Think about drainage now cause you'll wish you had later on if not. I made the mistake of leaving bare cement in my garage built grow room and discovered the low point quick......drains right into the front corner wall...

Also, think about where your AC will vent if using a wall unit, so its not feeding back into your garage heating everything up.

The best advice I can offer is put a door on each end. Often overlooked, but so fucking great to have when its all said and done.

Rock on. Nice build.

Good idea on gravel. Some fine pea gravel maybe. Something clean that won't track dust. I'll see how the concrete works first. The slab is poured with perfect slope for drainage out the big door. I'll be growing blue oysters, maitake, kings, nameko, and shiitake. I'm new to growing all except oysters so hopefully I won't get any issues. I'll have a shelving unit on the end for everything I'm growing out of blocks. Eventually this chamber will be mainly oysters in straw logs then my current grow chamber will be where all the lower fae and top fruiting mushies will be growing out of supplemented fuel pellets. My goal is 20-30 lbs a week from this chamber. And with both this and my old chamber operating I hope for 25-40 lbs. I have an associate to split up markets with on Saturday and a Sunday and Wednesday market as well to make all the sales.

Once this is done I need to source a 330gal tote for pasteurization and get a aa941. My 55 gal drum and prest 18qt will struggle to keep this freshly stocked on a weekly basis. My goal is to keep my labor down to one pasteurizing day and one pc day a week.

I have no a/c I will be using a pail swamp cooler in the hot weather and a space heater outside the chamber for cold days. Good idea on the second door. I can always cut the plastic and frame another door whenever. I don't plan on opening my garage door much too keep nosey neighbors at bay but still good idea.
