Why do we drink ethanol? 1

Quote:
Ethanol is thought to cause harm partly as a result of direct damage to DNA caused by its metabolites.[7] Most significant of the possible long-term effects of ethanol. In addition, in pregnant women, it causes fetal alcohol syndrome.
Ethanol's toxicity is largely caused by its primary metabolite, acetaldehyde (systematically ethanal)[8][9] and secondary metabolite, acetic acid.[9][10][11][12] Many primary alcohols are metabolized into aldehydes then to carboxylic acids whose toxicities are similar to acetaldehyde and acetic acid.[citation needed] Metabolite toxicity is reduced in rats fed N-acetylcysteine[8][13] and thiamine.
From wiki clearly.
Why don't we drink these instead:
Quote:
Tertiary alcohols cannot be metabolized into aldehydes[15] and as a result they cause no hangover or toxicity through this mechanism.
Some secondary and tertiary alcohols are less poisonous than ethanol because the liver is unable to metabolize them into toxic by-products.[16] This makes them more suitable for pharmaceutical use as the chronic harms are lower.[17] Ethchlorvynol and tert-amyl alcohol are tertiary alcohols which have seen both medicinal and recreational use.[18]
Quote:
TAA produces euphoria, sedative, hypnotic, and anticonvulsant effects similar to ethanol through ingestion or inhalation.[10] It is active in doses of 2,000–4,000 mg, making it 20 times more potent than ethanol.[11][12] Its hypnotic potency is between chloral hydrate and paraldehyde[13] and between benzodiazepines and ethanol.
I don't even drink really but seems like we could be being more efficient about it
Thoughts?

It's evolutionary, bro. We started as Chimps eating fermenting fruit and developed a taste.
How much long term research has been done on these alcohols and how much on ethanol? I'm honestly asking I like informed decisions.

Probably because it would be more difficult to produce and more expensive. Many tertiary alcohols naturally occur in alcoholic beverages at small amounts, however.

I read that alcohol prevents 30 illness but can cause 200 others.

Makes sense, that is interesting they occur in small amounts.
Just seems like to me with how much humans love alcohol and our modern technology we could have a better alternative.

Good questions, the fact they are more potent and don't have the same toxic metabolites peaked my interest a lot though.

i dunno... it doesn't really go into the pharmacodynamics
i'd at least want to know what it is doing to me
it looks like it could be a gaba agonist, who knows
or maybe it just fucks with protein conformation like ethanol
i'll stick with 1,4-bdo :v
that does get broken down by alcohol dehydrogenase and succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase but if you are doing milliliters of it can it really be that bad?

Humans drink/eat anything if they like how it makes them feel. Food can be drugs too in a sense. Like super spicy food, Spicy isnt a flavor. We only have 5 tastes and spicy isnt one of them. The spicy feeling is the capsacin (sp?) reacting with pain receptors and in some people high doses can cause temporary heart issues. But people love spicy food, I personally do as well. After a really spicy meal I def have a shift in consciousness. Super spicy food gets me high lol.

How do I make TAA?
I've been drinking regularly for the past month cuz its legal but recently the gov put pressure on producers and all our beer and cider has gone down in strength. I'm considering moving over to spirits because I can't get drunk off beer or cider here any more now its all under 5%

I would be interested in finding out how as well
I actually drank a super dank cider earlier, Atlas pomegranate cherry. So tasty and around 6% I think, I actually was pretty tipsy from one 22.
Though I drank it pretty fast since it tasted so good and I rarely drink at all. That sucks they did that too beer n ciders around you!
Its like they are encouraging hard alcohol use.

I can tell you must have some chemistry experience. Very interesting, I'd be willing to try this out for fun if it's legal.
I suppose, as I read in wiccan's report, that the reason people don't drink this instead of ethyl alcohol is because it lasts longer and is more dangerous at OD levels.

2-methyl-2-butene and ddH2O over a rhodium-fixed catalyst bed?
You could probably distil it from pentanols...
Or even easier, just buy the stuff :v

WOW o.o
A liter of the shit?
That's a lot, lol. I don't think I'd trust myself with that much.
Who knows, maybe I'll try. I want to order some gamma valerolactone, anyway.
They have smaller sizes on another popular online auction house.

I only could find a liter or half liter online, but I didn't look too long. If you had a few people to split it with it could work nicely.
It would probably last me a long ass time since I rarely drink

I think it started out that fermenting fruits and grains was an easy way to preserve them before the advent of refrigeration and dehydration.
and now it has become just a way to catch a buzz as well as a cultural thing.
