Which side do I put on the foil/lid after birthing?Top or bottom.
    #22293875 - 09/26/15 02:15 PM (8 years, 4 months ago)

I'm just about done dunking the cakes and I was wondering which side to put them down on in the tank. When I took the cakes out of the jars to dunk them the side where the lid and extra verm layer on it isn't perfectly flat for any of them.

It helps if you keep them in the same orientation they were when they were colonizing.

Would love to know what that means.

The simple answer to your question is on the bottom between the perlite and the cake so that the cake isn't directly on the perlite. I've never had a problem with them not being flat and just sitting funny. Sometimes a mush will make it fall over but its not a huge deal.

I used to use plastic lids, flip upside down,  fill them with dry Vermiculite, and sit the cake into/onto that. Then mist the Vermiculite when you mist the cake... It levels it off, and can act as another moisture reservoir for the cake. You can also pile a little Verm on top. I would do this with the dunk and roll, not in place of it.
Found the info with the trusty search engine... not my own original idea.

I know exactly what he's asking because I had the same problem of unstable cakes.  The "put them in the same orientation as they colonized in" answer is what somebody pointed out to me, so the side that had the dry verm barrier on it goes up.

I'm sure it's not a huge deal either way, but it's a tiny annoyance that's super-easy to fix.
