seedlings concern - now growlog!
    #22292975 - 09/26/15 11:20 AM (8 years, 4 months ago)

I'm worried that the wrinkly and morphed appearance once again indicates a virus

They germinated on the 17th, under a 400w mh bulb and are about a foot and a half away from the light or so, i'll have to double check the distance.

yeah i don't know for sure, but the leaves on my other plants started having growth mutations, forming off to one side or not on one side of the leaves. i chopped them before they could finish flowering, i was so worried about the potential viruses. i have some problems on my psychotria plant :frown: wonder if its the same issue, but these plants are young...

pH should be fine, my tap water is a little alkaline, at 8 i believe. i put a bunch of horticultural lime in with the soil to buffer it though, so i should be fine for the most part.

soil is fox farms, happy frog and ocean forest.

the containers are 2.5 gal, and there is one that might be a little bigger.

No concern. I never worried about virus problems, only bugs.
They just need time to grow. No stretch, that's good too.

How many babies you got?

Do you have pics of these leaves with mutated growth?  The seedlings look kinda ok, they will probably do fine.

They are So young 404, I wouldn't worry too much.

They look healthy to me.. As leaves start to emerge, they can sometimes look crinkled or odd.. and my turn regular, as the plant grows and fills out. Mutant things I'd worry about would be..(the internodes look like the plant might be a hermaphrodite. . or varigated leaves). . LOL

Your babies you have there, look ok to me, so far.. keep us posted.

adding lime to the soil helps buffer against pH fluctuations considering it's neutral. learned that one from George Cervantes. i'll be adjusting the water going in, no worries.
reason i did the lime this time, was because last time i had really acidic soil for some reason and had some lockout problems.

on the note of ferts and nutes, i'll be using organic, i'm probably going to get stuff from General Hydroponics.

the humidity on the other hand is noteworthy... as of right now, the rh is bout 30-40%, and may increase as the plants grow larger and transpire more. however, with a 430 cfm inline fan moving air through a 54 square foot space, this may not be the case.

same stuff... the happy frog has a lot of  the humic acids, so i'm guessing it was that. i have thought about it, but haven't really taken the time to mess with it. thought about doing perlite + coco fiber + peat moss + compost

hmmm... don't have any pictures this time... plants are growing pretty healthily for the most part...

saw a few spots on the plants though... looked like leaf miner tunnels, but on further inspection with a jewler's lupe, there was no leaf miner bug present... i've dealt with them before and they are a pain... but i'm not convinced this is them.

what would cause spots of lighter coloration in the leaves other than leaf miners? these aren't really tunnels, just spots. not curly lines that run far throughout the leaves... just spots, sometimes longer than they are wide...

Kind of sounds like thrips to me. Are the spots like a tiny version of what leaf miners do (squiggly lines)?

no thrips here. no bugs of any sort that's noticeable, and like i said i couldn't even see miners in the leaves themselves even with the 30x magnification of the jeweler's lupe.

hmm, seems like one of the seedlings (also the one in question) is growing ok, but lacks the green and seems like the edges of the leaves are curling up like it is having problems with respiration or that there is heat stress... which is funny because the other two are much healthier and green.

have been vaping a lot in the room and the intake notably is fixed to a side of the tent that directly passes over that particular seedling... ie, the air from the room moves directly over the seedling.

can veg glycerin and pg cause the moisture to suck out of the plant? will post a picture of it in an hour or so when the timer kicks over.

Here they are.

I think the morphing has stopped for the most part.

The one i've mentioned is pretty easy to spot though. What gives?
