Found more Chicken of the Woods - New Pix!

Went for another hike in the woods today. Brought my brand-new Garmin 62s GPS, and I'm sure glad I did. I managed to dead-reckon to the prior stump where I had first harvested Chicken of the Woods, but it is no longer fruiting. Nonetheless, I marked it as a waypoint.
Later, I stumbled on this gorgeous fleurette of Chicken of the Woods in an entirely different area. I harvested this bunch, and left for another day, the young 'uns that are coming out further up the log. I also marked this as a waypoint so I can navigate back in about 10 days.
I took about 5 tissue samples and put them on 2% malt agar. Sure hope I can clone these beauties!

Yum. That one is just the right age. What are you gonna cook with it?

The simple recipe given at the end of this video is where I started with my personal culinary exploits w/ Chicken of the Woods. I've since downloaded other recipes, so I'm slowly advancing in my skills as both a forager and a chef!
What was previously hard was discovering, yet leaving behind mushrooms for another day without being certain that I could bumble my way back to the location. I know that between my wife and I we can only consume a modest amount of wild mushrooms. So, the addition of the GPS has been kind of key. It gives me the option to harvest only the appropriate portion for a day or two's worth of consumption, and the confidence that I can return to the same spot at a later date for an additional harvest as seems appropriate for our needs. I'm very happy about that. I hate waste.
I'm EXTREMELY hopeful that I can cultivate this mushroom. I know it is difficult, but I've read several papers on the topic and think I can replicate or even exceed their results. See, for example:

They are so much better when they are young soft. In 10 days they will be all tough and stringy. Chicken of the woods is one of the easiest mushrooms to preserve. You can freeze it fresh. Just clean it, cut it up, and freeze. When You are ready to cook them don't even thaw, just straight from the freezer to the pan. I've had them 6 months later and they are still good.
Battered and fried is one of my favorite ways to cook 'em (one of my favorite ways to cook anything though) Also makes a great pickle. Those Gps coordinates will serve you well, They should keep coming back for a few years on the same tree/log/stump.
Good luck with the cultivation. Let us know how it goes.

Yeah, I know about the young and tender issue...but the ones in the bottom image are just too small at present (maybe 3cm) and in a week will still be tender, as well as larger. I don't want to be a pig about it. I just hope the deer don't find 'em first, although I am willing to share.
The battered and fried (just like chicken) recipe was my next on the list of ways to prepare them. Now that you've given me the thumbs up on that, I'm even more enthusiastic about trying them prepared that way. Thanks for the first-hand knowledge on that!

Just looked at my tissue cultures. All five are showing super looking mycelium!!!!! I'm totally stoked!!! Looks like I'm over the first hurdle. Now I'm REALLY pissed at myself for not taking a tissue sample from the Chicken of the Woods from the first stump I encountered this year. I'm such an idiot. Oh well. Live 'n learn.
Here is one of the five tissue cultures after only 48 hours. They all pretty much look the same at this point. Still, I'm doing the happy dance!
